Big D,

I just bought and received 2 - 16" disc hiller on 22" shanks ASC PART# 31752 , and 2 - clamp blocks ASC PART# 60878 , with 2 - wedge bolts ASC PART# 26614.

The Clamp block needed a few casting marks cleaned up with a Dremel Wheel, now they slide tightly over a 1.5" x 1.5" Solid Bar, which I plan to use as the " Tool Bar" , so I can adjust the width of the discs. I had to grind a little off of the Wedge bolts, so the Shaft shanks of the discs could slide into the mounting holes in the Clamp Block. The Clamp Block has 2 heavy set screws that LOCK the Disc Shaft for Height and Angle Adjustment.

My 73 year old Grandfather still plants a rather large garden each year, with 5 rows , each 70+ feet long of Potatoes, not to mention the 200 tomatoe plants , which he gives most of it away to neighbors and friends all over the countryside. I can't always be at the property when it is time to hill them. So I figure a couple dollars spent is well worth , knowing that all he has to do is hook up the hiller , jump on the tractor and be through hilling the potatoes in 5-10 minutes, rather than hoursssss like it has taken in the past.

My thoughts are to build the Tool Bar , then adjust the width and angle of the Disc , and the angle the disc engage the ground by adjusting the Toplink. With those 3 adjustments, you should have a wide range for different ground conditions. Loose, Compacted, Crusted tilled dirt, so on .....

I will post pics once I get back to the property, and get this project completed.

Dan

Use the biggest disks you can. The assembly needs to be able to rotate more or less cut and open and close depending on the crop being used on. Big disks will throw a LOT more soil. Can also do it with less trenching on the side of the hill. I have been using these with my Farmall Super A for many a year. Do it right and you will have an awsome tool. Do it wrong,... You can also turn them out and close them up and make a perfect little tater trencher. Just have the kids follow behind with the taters, then move the disks back out and face in to cover up the rows. We can plant about an acre of taters before lunch this way. Put a few cultivator sweeps on too, and clean up those rows while you hill. Mike

Valleyfarm,
That sounds like a great idea. Can you post some pictures?
Thanks,

I'm working on one myself, I almost ordered from agri-supply, but the light bulb came on as I walked past a pile of scrap so I'll start a thread in a couple of days. Just wondering what veggies can I use the hiller for, potatoes, carrots, and other root crops, can I use ridges for all my stuff?

Sorry, but I can hardley work this fancy typewriter, let alone one of those digital camaras. I would say if you go to ytmag.com and look in their picture gallery there should be plenty. All I really described is how the Super A cultivators work. Basicly any of the old truck farm tractors have a very similar set-up. I'm sure someone else here can snap a picture of their cub, AC G, etc. Mike
