I have a B8200 and today while mowing the RPM kept falling from 2800 to nearly 1800. Needless to say it was so obvious that we shut it down and checked all major componetents.

Ideas?

Thanks
Rick

Rick, I don't what you've already checked, but the only time I've known of something like that happening, the problem was a restriction in the fuel flow, i.e., fuel filter and line stopping up.

Need a little more information. Were you mowing or what. Did this happen under no load or full load? Yes, something is wrong. Either the engine is stalling out due to overload (lugging) or you have air in your fuel line or ??? How often does it happen and does the speed just cycle up and down over a period of seconds?

Thanks for your quick responses. It began with a load (mower underneath), noticed it began to loose power. Took mower power off and attempted to run tractor without any load.

It would stay at 2800rpm for about 30 seconds then slowly meander down to around 1800rpm before it leveled off.

Rick, I don't know what the problem is, but I'd be checking the fuel system from the tank onward for either an obstruction or a leak that lets air in. I'd probably start by changing (or at least cleaning) the fuel filter. My manual (much smaller tractor of course) tells about "cleaning" the fuel filter, which I never do; I just replace it.

I show a B8200 as 19 HP, Bird.

You must have oil and oil pressure. Check to be sure you should have no water in the site glass and a good fuel filter. They are your most likely problems. After that you have to bleed the fuel system as air will keep it from running. If that doesn't do it, it gets harder. Open the line at the fuel injectors and bleed any air out there as you crank it. Your owners manual describes this in detail, but it is not always quick or easy. Clean fuel with no air or water works most of the time.

Hey Wen, I'm really on top of things today. I read the original message and took it as an "M"8200./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Must be the reflection from the hot sun shining in the window./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I wondered about that "mower underneath" business; didn't know "M" models had belly mowers. Anyway, I had occasion to bleed the injectors on my B7100 (twice; once because I got water in the fuel and once because a neighbor ran it out of fuel) and it didn't take me but 10 or 15 minutes; much quicker and easier than the stories I've heard about big tractors and trucks, which I've never had occasion to do myself.

You guys are great! I went back down to the garage and checked the fuel filter and cleaned it, then I found a small tear in the hose leading into the filter mechanism. Needing to use the tractor now, I cut the hose and it still fit, reconnected, bled the air and WHAMO, I have my old tractor back. Finished mowing and am finished for the day. Thanks guys.

That's great, Rick!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Glad it was something simple.

Glad you got it fixed in record time. Now as the song goes, you have to help the next guy with a problem. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
