What is an optimum rpm for these tractors? I've been running mine by ear, and have come up with about 800 as a low idle.. 1k as a fast idle, and 1500-2000 as working speeds, with just above 2000 ( 2.2 - 2.5 ) as "scalded dog - scotty I need more power, etc "

Other peoples opinions?

thanks

I believe that the engines have a limiter on them to keep them from running too fast. I have heard about adjusting the limiter to get a little more rpm. The manual for the 186 says normal working speed is 1700-2600 rpm. PTO speed is 2430 for 540.

Re: rpm and overheating

I have no problem getting the rpm's that I need on my 2210. but I do have a problem with overheating above 2000rpm and seems like only when I use the tiller, with the radiator cap off I can see the water circulating in the radiator, everything seems to be clean in and on the radiator. If anyone has any advice to this problem please advise. Thanks a lot. Russell

Re: rpm and overheating

The normal advice on Yanmar gray overheating is to do a chemical flush of the radiator and to use no more than 30/70 mix antifreeze.

Re: rpm and overheating

I have a YM2210 with a RS1400 Tiller. Never had any problems with overheating at 2600 RPM while tilling or any other higher engine load operating such as heavy mowing.
I would agree with the cooling system flush if all is clean for proper air flow. What evidence of overheating do you have?
Do you have a boil over with the panel light indication or a panel light indication only?

Re: rpm and overheating

I rented a Kubota last summer to brush mow about 5 acres of weed and thistle. That tractor overheated when pushed a little fast.
This spring I am the proud owner of a YM1602D Yanmar and expect it to do many jobs on our small farm along with the IH.
Overheating advice: Look for Red Line products in your area. They mostly make synthetic oils and additives for the racing and high performance group. They make a product called "water wetter" that works wonders. They advise for best results to use 100% water mixed with their product. It can be used with a mixture of coolant/water with a little drop in performance. I have personally found it to be great stuff, and worth the 8 bucks per bottle. It will make any cooling system work MUCH more efficient.

Good Luck,

Re: rpm and overheating

mom_dad42,
I don’t know from your bio how old your tractor is. But anyway, look in your radiator and see if there are any deposits in the core holes. If there are you may need professional help to rot it out. If not keep reading.
Have you been where there is a lot of dust or weed pollen? Some times when a tractor is operated in dust or pollen and there is a mist, heavy dew or after a rain problems will show up. You will see the front of the radiator will have a lot of the pollen and dust on it. Most of the time people will just take the garden hose and wash it off. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. The reason that it doesn’t always work is that the water combined with the foreign matter will cake up between the fins. When you look at it, it will look clean but down deep in the fins the build up of cake is still causing a problem. The easiest way to take care of it is oven cleaner. Spray it in to the core from the front, then just wait for about two or three minutes. Then get the garden hose again and wash it out really well. When you start to wash you will be amazed at all of the crud that will come out.

Re: rpm and overheating

Mark R asked some good questions-----. What evidence of overheating do you have?
Do you have a boil over with the panel light indication or a panel light indication only?
It is normal for water to flow into the overflow bottle while working.
