In my owner's manual, the procedure for start-up is:
"Set hand throttle lever at half to fully open position"; then once you start it and engine runs smoothly, "set engine speed back down to approx. 1500 rpm(close to idle) to allow engine warm up." This was also reaffirmed by the dealer when I asked him about it. This doesn't seem right to hear the cold engine rev-up that high right off the bat.
I have another source who was a diesel mechanic for years that tells me to always start up at low rpms(idle) and leave until warm-up. He says NOT to crank with throttle high....(which to me feels more correct).
What are you other diesel tractor owners cranking up at: idle/low rpm or mid/high throttle.

I start it at idle and then bump it up to about 1000 to warm up. The only time I may bump the throttle to a high RPM while starting is if I'm bleeding the fuel system.

I start my Kubota at probably 1/4 throttle or less. RPM gauge shows around 1200 typically once it cranks up. I let it warm up at between 1200 & 1400. Then it's off to play, I mean work.

Don't know if this is correct but it's what I was told to do by dealer.

I start mine at idle, then bump it up to 1000-1200 RPM for warm up.

You fellows all live in the south. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here in the north, full throttle in winter - standing on the foot throttle. In fact the big tractors have a start button on the injector pump - push it in for full fuel flow to get it started when cold.

But I typically bring it back to that 1000-1200 rpm until the oil gets to flow a bit.

Clarion PA is far from the Miami of the north. I always drop the RPM's to about 800 to 1000 when I shut the tractor down and then start it at the same setting.

From where I'm standing, you are pretty far south too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I always start my 990 with the throttle set at idle regardless of temperature, but judging by the sound and decent puff of black smoke for the first 1/2 second, I'm pretty sure the governor actually holds it wide open until running. I'd be a little surprised if this weren't the case for most tractors assuming a mechanical governor. Pure electronic controls might be a different story.

I'm not a big fan of revving an engine too high until the oil circulates, so as long as it starts at idle settings, that's what I'll do (and it always starts immediately ...)

Kubota L 3400 -- I hit the glow plug warm switch (above 60 degrees 2 seconds, below 30 degrees 5 seconds , 0 degrees 10 seconds) at idle and wait 10 min. for both engine and hydraulic fluid to warm up. Check your owners manual or contact the dealer for your make / model as to start up procedure.

Treat your tractor as to how you "Liked to be waked up" minus coffee!!!!!!!!

In starting a diesel engine at -22 F in Vermont or around 0 F in NJ, I've used fast idle setting on the hand throttle, had the engine on a lower hose or block heater for an hour or so and STILL push the foot pedal near to the floor before turning the key to glow it for about a minute (old days before fast glow plugs; now it's about 5 seconds). Start instantly. Don't do any of these, and it'll start and die, start and die UNTIL the combustion chambers are warm enough to keep it going or you supply enough fuel with more throttle opening to keep it going.

For my present Benz with the its fast glow plugs and the JD, they'll both start and die if I don't have the throttle opened to idle it around 1500 rpm. Open the throttle a little bit, and they'll start instantly after a 5 second glow and keep running.

Any tractors that start at idle probably have something that keeps the glow plugs going or possibly open the throttle without your help, etc. OR the folks haven't reset their idle speeds to idle with engine hot at 800-1,000 rpm. My JD started fine at idle, too, until I reset its idle speed to the correct hot setting.

Starting my Kubota L3000DT in the cold weather, below 20 degrees, I plug in hte block heater for at least 30 minutes hit the glow plug switch for 6 to 8 seconds with the throttle at the lowest position.

From 20 to 40 dergees I hit the glow plug switch for 3 to 4 seconds with the throttle at the lowest position.

The tractor starts and the engine RPM goes to what sounds like about half throttle for a couple of seconds then settles down to idle speed. At which point I advance the throttle to bring engine RPM to about 1100.

This has always worked fine and the engine starts after the same amount of cranking every time. After the engine has warmed up on a re-start I leave the throttle at the lowest position and just hit the starter and it starts at an idle.

It must be when the glow plugs are turned on that some amount of fuel is allowed into the combustion chamber or something to allow the engine RPM to be higher than the throttle setting.
