Advice please as to what level of RPMs I should turn off my 2720 at, so that I'll have the right throttle amount when I start up. My tractor tends to sit for a few weeks between usage (not sure if that matters), and I want to make sure it has the right level of rpms etc. when I start it.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Keith

Your tractor should be started and stopped with the throttle lever all the way down, engine at idle.

Thanks. That's what I'll do.

Follow up question. If the tractor is in a shop that is heated to around 40 degrees in the winter, how much time do the glow plugs need before starting up?

About 5-8 seconds or so is all you should need, but you will be able to tell after a few times buy the way it starts.

FYI- Your machine does not have glow plugs, it's a Direct Injected engine with a heater grid in the air intake.

As always, thanks very much. Every day I learn something new...today is a bonus...two things!

As a follow up to Kenny's answer, all engine should be started at low RPM and not "revved" until you get some oil flow going to those bearings. What airplane owners often do is "walk" the prop thru several revolutions to get some oil pumping to the bearings before they crank away. If I had my way, I'd have a dry sump system with an electric boost pump to push some oil thru all the journals before I started cranking. Guess that is being a bit **** though...

Regarding the glow plugs, on my 4400 I've never used them yet, although my machine in a garage most of the time. Even when I leave it out when it is cool I don't need the GP's. But cool is 30's-40's, we don't often get "cold" here in Maryland...!!

Your 2720 manual says "6. Set the engine speed hand throttle to the 1/2-3/4 fast position."

2720 Operators Manual

My 790 manual says 1/3-1/2, but I start it at idle.

That's why I was asking. Now that it's getting cooler, when i have the throttle at 1/2 or so, I get a lot of chugging and blue smoke. When it was 70 degrees out (20 degrees for my fellow Canadians!) I didnt get the chugging and blue smoke to any extent at 1/2 throttle. To your point, the owner's manual says the below, and it mentions the glow plugs as well...

6. Set the engine speed hand throttle to the 1/2-3/4 fast position.

7. Turn ignition key switch to the ON position.

8. Check indicator lamps:

Engine oil pressure light will glow.

Alternator/battery charging light will glow.

Engine glow plug light will glow for 15 seconds. Engine is now ready to start.

I just don't believe you should have the throttle 1/2 open when starting any engine...

Same here Kenny, common knowledge tells me starting a combustion engine at the lowest speed possible will do the lesser harm.
