Anyone have one of these tillers? I just bought it from a dealer in Wisconsin and when I got it back home it didn't work. The pto shaft spins clean but the tines don't move. Any ideas from those who've had them apart? I'm brand new to Yanmar, the F20D seems great and I have a manual on the way from Hoye so I won't ask all the 'lever' questions I have. Thanks.

Welcome to TBN!!:thumbsup: I do not have any info on the tiller to help you. Is the tiller a gear driven or chain drive? It depends a bit on how easily the PTO spins--If VERY easy by hand--then I would say the problem is in the gear box. If there is some resistance, then I would suspect the drive mechanism--either a chain is broken or a key is sheared off somewhere. (Or something worse)

Thanks. Love this site so far. It's chain drive. When we loosened the main middle cover and pulled up on the pto shaft, it would spin tines barely. I think I can hear/feel the drive shaft slightly turning (maybe by some type of friction). Where are the pin/s and how does this thing come apart? Is it easier to pull out the shaft from the brace side or the chain side?

Try driving it from the other side--that is from the tiller tines. does the PTO shaft turn? It kind of sounds like the chain is off the sprockets or the teeth are worn off one sprocket.
I do not know how it comes apart.

The bearing could be frozen or just plain worn out.
Pull the side cover opposite the chain drive cover and inspect it.
New bearings are only 12.00 at Napa, just a little trouble to change it is all.
I just went thru 13 Yanmar tillers, but all the bearings were good on them.

we took it apart completely today. The main drive shaft off the planetary was broke right in half. At least it snapped on the weld where the two parts connect. At least my neighbour is a good welder. Should have it going tomorrow after a few bills.

:thumbsup: Probably something jammed while it was powered on and it found the weak spot. That is not such a bad place for a weak spot too. Hope all goes back together well.

in a bind! fixed it and put it together only to realize two bolt holes without threads on the top side of the chain casing! Whou at fell into the casing? Is there a tensioner or something we have to fish out? Please respond asap if you know what's in there and how to get it out!
Finally fixed it. Just a word of advice to not undo the two bolts (should've known) on the upper side without the large plate, as that will cause the other tensioner to fall into the chain case. We had to take it all apart again to get it out.

I'm going to glom onto this older link as my chain driven cultivator quit working this weekend. I don't have a picture (didn't have the camera with me) and I have no idea the make/model except to say it's O L D.
It was working fine in soft soil, then the cultivator blades just stopped turning even though the pto, gear box, shaft etc continued to turn. When I lifed the implement, the blades would turn...when lowered again they stopped. I pulled the upper gear housing and the chain is intact and turning...I assume the lower gear's teeth are worn to the point that they won't handle any resistance. I've never tried to take the gear box apart...any thoughts before getting greasy? Again, sorry for lack of pictures/info on implement. I will look for a label plate next time up.
