Ten years ago we were out of our house and in an apartment for nearly two weeks due to a skunk spraying under our house. According to the county 'skunk catcher' there was probably more than one that sprayed because the stench was so intense. They were getting under the house by going under the central unit return air. So I mixed and poured 300 pounds of Quick Crete around the vents.
This time it all started with neighbors posting pictures from their security cameras of skunks parading around their houses. Neighbors without cameras were complaining about skunk smells at night. I laughed to myself because of the 300-lb of concrete I had sealed off the place where they were getting under our house. Then we started getting the smells at night.
The little stinkers have dug under the concrete and are under the house again.
So I have been waging a weeks long battle against them. I have found their weakness! Lance Peanut Butter and Crackers, the orange kind. Apparently they cannot resist them. The first one I caught was less than ten minutes after setting the trap. Sheriff's Deputy neighbor and I were standing within ten feet of the trap and I heard a clang. We had a skunk. If not for a large hydrangea plant we would have probably been sprayed.
Biggest mistake was using #2 shot Express shells to dispatch it. It was just after sunset and I couldn't see what I was getting off the side saddle on the shotgun. Instead of the low velocity buckshot I've learned to use I loaded two high powered shells. Flames came 2' out of the barrel and my ears rang all the next day. Next door deputy said it was overkill on the little skunk.
Trapped and dispatched two more, using the low powered buckshot and earplugs!! None in the traps this morning and it's been two days since I caught one but the smell is still strong so I know there is at least one more.
I hate skunks.
