Got a 500 that if it sits for a hour or so it will not crank. It will turn over but does fire. This has happened twice. After a while it will start up. Any idea what could cause this? I've loosened the gas cap no change. Both times it has been sitting in sun during middle of the day.

Cranks but won't fire. Sounds like fuel shortage..

Check fuel lines for any debris that restricts fuel flow.

May take some detective work to track down the cause... checking off one thing at a time.

When it finally does start, is there black smoke? Meaning it is way rich? I have seen this happen with a slight leak in the carburetor inlet needle/seat. Since the RTVs are injected (I think), you may still be having this problem if an injector nozzle is slowly leaking down after it is shut off.

I had your exact problem with my RTV500.

Seemed like fuel vapor lock, but vapor lock is a carb problem and the RTV500 is fuel injected.

Kubota mechanic was skeptical when I described the problem. He confirmed the same problem next day.

He cleaned out the fuel tank, put on a new fuel pump and suggested I use '0' methanohol marine gas, which I do now. No problem since.

dont see any black smoke. may drain gas tank and put in non ethanol see how it does. the funny things is each time it has happened it been sitting out in the sun and seems like something getting hot, but not sure what. but it still cranks a little later and it not moved out of sun.

You can eliminate the "sun" variable by parking it in the shade..

My 500 runs perfect on E10 fuel, so I don't think that's the problem...

tried to get issue to happen yesterday with no luck. hard to look for a problem if it want occur. is there a fuel tank drain? i was tracing out the fuel lines and see the carbon box and tried looking up some info on it but very little out there guess I can just take one line off at a time? has anyboyd ever pulled the fuel pump out, looks like not that easy due to location.

wouldnt start again yesterday. got to troubleshooting and did not have fuel. looks like the fuel filter is plugged up. took fuel pump and off ran in a cup of gas and pumps great. calling to try to see if you can only get fuel filter today. once again this happened with it sitting in sun but now just know that it is coincidence.

well comes out cannot just buy the fuel filter alone. have to buy pump and all at $180. so i cleaned on it the best i could to see how long it will last. no good way to do it that i could see. does anyone have any suggestions on how they cleaned one? i used air and blew it out. is there any info out on the vent lines off the gas tank and the carbon box with the three way valve, i was tracing it all down and just trying to figure out the purpose of it all. thanks

same issue is going on again with not getting fuel. its probably the pump filter plugged again. has anyone ever found a replacement filter for these? or I may try cut it off and putting in an inline filter after the pump just to see how long it last. I'm sure there is a reason for filter on bottom of pump but hadn't got a good answer yet. thanks

My refusal to start, like yours, was when the engine was hot. (See Post #4). I think it is old fuel, with 10% + ethanol fuel staling fairly fast. Since I changed to 100% "marine" gas I have not had a recurrence. I buy Chevron marine gas four gallons at a time, which is a two week supply for me.

How old is your fuel in your fuel can(s)?

How old is the fuel in your RTV500 tank?

Do you exhaust all fuel in the RTV500 tank before adding fresh gas or is the RTV500 fuel a changing blend of old and new fuel?

If you are not going to scrub out your RTV500 tank I suggest adding SEAFOAM to your fresh, non-ethanol fuel.

Mine had been sitting all day before I tried to crank it. The fuel may be a month old but I always add Star-tron to each tank. I put Seafoam on it about twice a year. I normally top my RTV tank off about once a month never try to let it run empty and its probably 1/4 tank left when I do that. It has cranked fine since last issue so we shall see what next few times bring. Always happens when I'm in a hurry and need to use it.

You are doing all the right stuff.

When you eventually solve the problem it will be interesting to know your solution.
