I wanted to start this thread since I've found the wording and layout of the RTV Owner's Manual not very user friendly.

A couple things that come to mind after recently completing the 50 hour service.
I don't have the manual in front of me but a couple things I noticed.
There are not sections for initial service. There's the "every ## hours" but not anything specifically for the first 50 hours. I got a list from the dealer and when I find it I'll post.

I also found, it's important to read ahead. In the maintenance section, read everything associated with what you plan on doing a couple times before you start.

Example:
The sections on changing the tranny oil and filter aren't very well written and are separate maintenance items in the manual. In the instructions for both it effectively says to do what you'd think. Drain the oil, clean the magnets, change the filters, add oil, run, re-check level and top off as necessary.
What I didn't like:
You had to go look elsewhere to check the capacity. They should at least mention its 2.5 gallon capacity to avoid overflow of a standard sized oil catch bucket.
After all the step-by-step directions, at the very end, there's a little blurb. (After the step-by-steps)
"IMPORTANT - After changing your fluid, don't run the machine for several minutes or transmission damage may occur."
Is it me, or shouldn't this go BEFORE it lists the steps which include to run the engine? BTW - it also says to not run at more than 50% for a while afterwards as well.

What else have people found?

bczoom, I think it is also very important that RTV owners know that the manual is wrong when it states the engine oil capacity is 2.1 quarts. After you brought this error to my attention, I found that it took almost exactly three quarts to put the engine oil in the middle of the dip stick when changing the engine oil and filter.

Apparently if you follow the manual and use 2.1 quarts and then drive quite a bit on hills, you could very well have severe damage. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks.
Forgot about that one.
As corrected by Kubota, capacity is 3.3 quarts. I used 3.5 to bring it to the top mark on the dipstick.

BTW, meant to ask. Did everyone else who's changed their tranny fluid a real bugger trying to dump it in from a 5 gal. bucket? I had to strap the funnel into place (it kept falling over) then carefully try to dump from a full 5 gal. without it going everywhere. It's a little cramped in there.
Doh, just re-read the manual. They said to lift the cargo box. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Just kidding... It is tight in there...

I was just posting something on another forum (oops. probably shouldn't say that) about a winch setup for the rear of a RTV. (if anyone wants, I'll post here too but it was in response to a question).
Anyway, needed the specs for the towing capacity off the front receiver (wasn't listed but I guessed 900#) and ran across something. In the specs RTV Specs in the category of "Cargo Box", it lists the Length as being without the brush guard. What does the brush guard have to do with the length of the box? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'm interested in your info about a rear winch for an RTV 900.

If I get stuck, I think I'd rather have the ability to winch back to where I came from so I can get home, or find a different route. A rear winch seems more useful to me.

Let me provide the abridged version since that forums thread is getting long.

A mfgr of RTV components made a winch/fairlead mount to compete against the OEM one. His is nice in that the fairlead mount is integrated so the fairlead isn't sticking way out like the OEM one.
A poster requested the same thing be attached to a 1 1/4" draw bar so a winch can be mounted via the receivers of the RTV.
So, I went into a 700 word reply that said I too would like to see (or make) the same thing but had some concerns. Since it was my post, I'll post some of my wording below (again, none of this is wording from others).
Another part of my post was the idea (and design) of using a snatch block off the front that allowed the cable to go under the RTV. Then using the winch installed on the front will work for towing you out backwards.

It came down to he will be creating a winch mount that will connect to front or rear and also include wiring for a quick disconnect battery cables.

MY POST:
Biggest thing I'm struggling with is the capability/capacity of a 1 1/4" receiver. In general and in particular on the RTV, these receivers don't have much capacity. A 3000# winch strapped to a 2000# machine with a receiver that only has a 1300# rear (and I think 900# front) may get a little dangerous.

I would want a setup that would not normally remain on the receiver. Hanging off the front or back while driving (or even storing... my daughter caught her leg on a drawbar yesterday putting her in tears) doesn't seem good. Too exposed. It would need to be stored in the cargo box or someplace else.

Depending on winch size used, I'd probably set up a heavy wiring harness (like you'd find in a RV or something) instead of jumper cables. They can better handle the amperage.

The winch setup will also need control from the operator area. Not an issue, just a point.

I'd like to keep up with the progress of this idea.

Do you feel free to tell me either the url for the other site, or the name of the mfgr, or some other info that will let me monitor developments? Or maybe you can post here when something becomes available?

I don't want to violate any posting rules or anything; just want to follow these developments.

I need a moderator here... Please advise.

Since the manufacturer has a separate forum site, am I allowed to post a URL to the product site? They make and sell products for UTV's.

Outside of being a member on the other forum, I'm in no way associated with the site/company.

Just bring up "Amsoil" versus anything else, wait for the war, then you'll get your moderator. They'll close the thread, but you'll get one. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh yeah, cute daughter! Since I have 5 kids (my youngest turned 5 today) they would all want to be in the pic and it wouldn't fit. Therefore, up goes the pic of my constant companion when I'm out on my property. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
