I test drove a RTV900 yesterday. Nice machine except the engine braking gave me whiplash when taking my foot of the accelerator pedal. Is this normal? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yea, thats how it is for most people at first. Once you get the touch of the pedal your able to drive it more smoothly. The only time I find it agrivating is when your trying to backup slowly.

I also test drove one and noted that. i think you could get used to it but i'll bet in time they'll work on that problem and solve that.
the thing is built like a tank. IMO the best built on the market!

I've found that as long as you don't let up the pedal all the way, you are fine. You will pretty much stop but not jar your head all around. However, if you take the foot all the way off and let it release, it is going to let you know it for sure. I haven't had a chance to really get out and use mine yet but hopefully it will live up to my expectations. The quality appears to be top notch. GS

I find the VHT braking to be a bonus and hope they don't engineer this feature out in the future. It only takes a short time to become adept at using the accelerator pedal to control both the acceleration and "braking". I never have to touch the brake pedal except when changing the gear shift lever. I can't imagine ever having to replace the brakes on a RTV900.

One aspect I'm not too crazy about is the required maintenance for the RTV900 brakes especially seeing how they are hardly ever used. Kubota wants you to replace the brake fluid every two years, which is OK, but they also want you to rebuild the master cylinder and replace all the brake hoses. I think that's a little extreme. Also, they are quite specific about only using Kubota DOT3 fluid. If you have to use another brand of DOT3 fluid for some reason they want you to bleed the whole system and replace with Kubota DOT3 as soon as possible.

I've found that "two footing" the RTV will result in smooth stops. For some reason if I use the brakes, even just slightly, the stops are smooth without any jerking. It takes quite a bit of practice to get smooth stops otherwise, and even with a lot of practice, you will still launch a passenger forwards on occasion.

Thats a normal way a hydrostatic transmission acts.. Its way better then a belt driven torque converter type drive system where it freewheels when you let off the gas.. Imagine how fun that is with a full loak going downhill. I love the Kubota 'built in' braking:)

Yep, and it gets less abrupt after it's been broken in good around 50 hours or so. They are working on making the dynamic braking a little less abrupt. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
