Run Away Diesel

   / Run Away Diesel #21
A friend of mine was a generator guy in Gulf War 1. He had a Cat runoff while he was standing on it. He took off his field jacket and stuffed it into the air intake. The Cat swallowed the jacket whole! It did stop the runoff though and they were able to make repairs very simply. Now the good part. When Cliff told his CO about it and asked him to sign for a new jacket, the Army charged him for 'losing' his coat!!! He tried for over a year to get them to reverse that decision, but nope, they never did! Nice guys!

I used my field jacket to beat down a brush fire one windy night.

Had to buy a replacement. I was "not authorized" to use my coat to stop that fire.

There is no time to diagnosis the cause as being the injection pump. When it runs away, the best and only way to stop it is to stop the air somehow.
Or if equipped pull the compression release. You could try stalling it, but I'm not sure how that would work with the extreme boost in hp.

Choking off the air works on any engine. No need to wonder if there's a compression release somewhere.

I got to watch as the V-12 from an M88 tank recovery vehicle sort of ran away. It had been ground-hopped and the usual controls were not in place, so they couldn't get it stopped. That was a 1200 cubic inch air-cooled gasser, and the air intake on that thing was about 8" diameter, but a clipboard quickly placed across it solved the problem.

On the phone, I talked my son through doing the same on my family van (351 gas engine) when the ignition switch failed while he was out of town helping my wife with her business. They got to the hotel and couldn't turn off the van.

Did the same on a friend's Mercedes 240D when the solenoid failed. I didn't know enough about the vehicle (or diesels) to understand that problem at that time, but I got it stopped.

It's the all-purpose, any-engine solution.

When my new 2005 Kubota B7510HST was delivered by the dealer in May 2005, he warned me to be careful not to severely lug the engine while loading up the FEL. If the wheels are on concrete and the front wheels are not able to slip, you can trash the transfer case and/or front axles. And under rare conditions you can reverse the diesel engine and get a runaway.
