That picture looks like the operator just shoved the throttle forward though...

Our old 4020 smoked pretty good, but we had the pump "kicked up a notch" and it smoked all the time, even at idle (blueish smoke). We also had a Ford 6600, talk about smoke, that thing SMOKED. I mowed a LOT of hay with that tractor. The Allis-Chalmers 190 (One-Ninety) on the silage blower was no slouch either for making a little cloud. On the blower after dark, when it was pulling hard, you could see a little orange-ish flame coming out the exhaust stack, pretty neat.

I miss the smoke... Diesels are supposed to smoke, but they don't anymore

Well, I don't know about that, but I do know that that 6600 was the smoke king. Put it under any (light, heavy, didn't matter...) kind of load, and the black smoke would roll.

Up until the mid to late 80's, Diesels smoked... that's the way it was, it was expected. Some smoked more, some less, but it was normal. Then the engineers started to figure out how to make them not smoke (or at least not smoke as much). Now, with the new technology, if a diesel smokes at all, there probably IS something wrong with it. We got a new Case/IH 4110 (130 hp) back in the spring of '88, you couldn't make that thing smoke.

I just get a kick out of seeing people today thinking that there's something wrong with an older tractor when they see some black smoke coming from the exhaust.

I have wondered the same thing at tractor pulls and threseree's when the steamers are running.

Hope they never try to stop those.
