I just picked up a new Yanmar 424 TLB! Had browsed this forum and a few other locations and read nothing but good things about it. I think it will suit my needs well. We are in the process of building a new house and with the 600+ ft driveway and 24 acres of land I have a lot of little landscaping and driveway maintenance projects planned for it.

I am thinking eventually I might want to get a 3pt hitch mounted log splitter. Does anybody know if that could be powered via the hydraulic lines that go to the backhoe (with backhoe removed of course)?

One would think so. Search 3pt splitters and see what you come up with. I've seen them but they look like they cost almost the same as a stand alone splitter. Whatever you get be sure you get one that can flip up for vertical operation. You don't want to be lifting heavy rounds up to a horizontal only splitter. If it's a stand alone you can still tow it with your 3pt so you have as much mobility as one mounted to the 3pt.

You may want to look for a PTO driven splitter that has its own resevoir and pump. That is what I have and it works well. All the PTO is doing is powering the pump.

How much weight can the boom handle? If it can handle 400-500 lbs, why not remove the bucket and attach a splitter to the bucket pivot point. Mount the splitter upside down so you can split large rounds that are laying on their sides on the ground. The large rounds would need to be clocked properly to be lined up with the wedge's direction of travel, but you could nudge them into position with the end of the splitter. You could even lift the large rounds off the ground (grab and hold them with light wedge pressure) and then swing/lift the boom and finish the split over a truck bed or trailer bed so the 2 halves fall into the truck/trailer. You could work the operation from the backhoe operator's seat- unhook the bucket cylinder lines and plumb them to the splitter cylinder so you don't have to buy any control valves/levers- just use the lever that normally operates the bucket to operate the splitting cylinder.

Kind of like this guy did: Excavator Log Splitter Project - YouTube It would be a real back saver!

That excavator log splitter is pretty slick! Has me thinking. Loader on the 424 can lift up to 1200 pounds so weight isn't even remotely an issue.

You'll like the 424, I know I sure apprieciate having mine. Have primarily been moving dirt with it in preparation for a raised trailer parking, and patio area around the house (everything sloped away from house with no usable flat space). Have also done A LOT of fine grade work in preparation for a 3300 SF concrete driveway. Feel proud that I now have the ability to self perform a lot of the landscaping work around the yard. That backhoe is something I sure would like to have. I imagine it would be perfect for digging the base for a block retention wall (one of the items on the list).

Congrats and enjoy!
