JD 855
I am new to the world of tractor so i have lots of questions. I have a late model JD 855 with the battery is in front of the radiator. The tractor will run for 10- 15 minutes, then it seems like it runs out of fuel. My model has a mechanical fuel pump. I would than use the lever on the side of the fuel pump to try to fill up the fuel filter; it will only fill up about a half inch. It would start and run for another 10 minutes. If I take the filter off and fill it up all the way it would run longer. I first replaced the fuel filter, no help than I replaced the mechanical fuel pump and it is doing the same thing.
Any ideas?

If the tractor runs 10-15 minutes you don't have a pump problem. Something is clogged or you have a collapsed fuel line.

Drain the fuel tank and inspect ALL the fuel filters. You may also have a filter in the fuel tank on top of the sediment bowl.

Come to think of it, I would disconnect the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump at the pump and drain all the fuel into a bucket. Then find and clean all the screen filters.

Assuming its a fuel problem:

Ensure fuel tank vent is open.

Start by draining some fuel from the bottom of the tank and check for water or other debris.

Check inside tank as much as possible for movable items that may block the fuel outlet.

Drain tank and check bottom again.

Check fuel lines for interior degradation and any blockages. Replace fuel filters. Use new fuel and work your way through the system making sure you have fuel at all points to the injector pump.

If problem still persists start looking at the fuel shutoff solenoid and the relays.

Then move on to the safety shutdowns.

And after that don't pay any attention to my comments as quite obviously they were in error!:D

If you have not ready found the John Deere parts site. You may want to look at how things look before you start taking things about. It does appear there are 2 possible locates for the fuel tank.

Update on running out of fuel, I took out the fuel tank cleaned everything out, didn稚 find anything in the tank. However when I put everything back together it is running just fine. Must of been something logged inside the lines that I didn稚 see.
I thank everyone for your help in this matter.

Ok, did you inspect the screen filters in the pump? If you had junk in the tank you could also have some in the screen filters too.

Back to the drawing board. Just came back in from using the JD 855. It ran great for about 45 minutes, and then it started to sputter again. I looked at the fuel filter and it was almost empty like before.
I than while the engine was still running I opened the bleed screw on the fuel filter. The filter filled up right away. My next step will be to replace the fuel lines. Should I do it one at a time or bite the bullet and replace all of them?

Hint: What is between the fuel filter and the tank outlet?
