Ok, so a new-to-me D140 (2012 model). Has a 22hp B&G V-Twin (654cc). Rode it around the guys place who I bought it from and all seemed fine. He tells me new fuel pump, fuel filter, fresh oil change and filter. And all look new, so ... Was mowing today, about 20 minutes in to it and the mower starts to sputter for a few minutes, and then eventually quits. doesn't want to restart. I sit for 10 minutes or so and it starts and runs again for another 10 minutes and quits. Fuel filter has fuel and is pulling fuel. When it's running and before it shuts off, the motor surges between full idle and low idle. I clean off everything that he didn't before I bought it, and try to find out why, if and where it might be either vapor locking. Fuel cap seems fine too. The one thing I did do, was check the oil again, and it appears it was at the "add" mark. clean, but "Add". I'm thinking he didn't put enough oil in it. Anyway, I put everything back together after cleaning and checking everything I can get my hands on. Run it again for 20-30 minutes, and no issues.

Question - does the JD D140 B&G 22hp V-Twin have a low oil shut off? switch? I can't find an oil pressure switch anywhere externally. Haven't taken off covers to start looking yet, since it's still hot.

Thanks,
mike

Check your coils, going bad from heat cycling.

Also check fuel flow, there may be a foreign object in the tank that finds it's way to the fuel outlet covering it under suction,
then when it stops it floats back around opening the outlet for flow again.. can test with an aux tank or just pull the line going into the
carb and let it run into a pail to see if it stops after a while....

and coils going bad could be a consideration as mentioned, but hard to believe both would go bad at the same time that it would quit
without running on 1 cyl for a while then die all together... spark test after it shuts down would show that ...

Mike,

Welcome to TBN
:welcome:

So it sounds like it was a low oil level issue. Let us know if the problem returns.

I believe that would be a B&S V-Twin. Without more info on the engine, it is hard to determine what safety devies are on the engine.

Can you look for the engine model number?

not sure about your vtwin, but the two vtwin B&S engines i have both have low oil pressure sensors. But the engines have "Extended use" under the nameplate. not sure all vtwins share this

That's something I hadn't thought of for sure. So while it's running, the fuel filter isn't full of fuel. As it sits right now, the filter is entirely full. Also, when this occurred, the fuel filter was more horizontal than it is now, which leads to believe that maybe the fuel system was sucking air. In addition to adding the necessary oil, I also repositioned the fuel filter to make it more upright.

It's not uncommon for the fuel filter to be partially empty when running.

in the case of an obstruction, it wouldn't suck air, it just won't pull fuel.... almost like a vacuum is created ,,,, but fuel isn't flowing..

Not almost like a vacuum, it will pull a partial vacuum. And given any flaw in the system it will most certainly suck air if it cannot draw fuel.
