Rural Garbage Service

After spending the day cleaning up some garbage that one of our dogs got into, I started wondering how much money I've saved over the years by not paying for rural garbage service. It's always been a bit of a pita but I still think it's worth the hassle of taking a bag of garbage to the dumpster at work every other week. My parents have never paid for the service and they've lived in the country for 50 years.

So, how much are people paying for rural garbage service these days?

$192 for a whole year. 5-bag max.


I used to burn trash. Was always a hastle, then the unburnable stuff like tin cans, glass jars, foil wrappers, etc that always end up in the burnabls even when trying to separate.

Whole lot easier just paying $16 a month not to worry

I have a 6 lid dumpster that is emptied every week. Usually not full but some weeks it is. $35/month.

He'll take anything but steel and wood. Says it tears up his truck to compact those products. So I have a burn barrel for wood and take metal to the recycler about once a year.

If we get caught dumping our household garbage in our employer's dumpster, we get fired. Imagine if all 300 of us did that?

We pay $171 per year for trash pickup and $32.40 per year for recycling (which is mandatory, here). So, $203.40 for both, or $3.91 per week. I have to say our trash service is excellent! So is our recycling. Both are 96 gallon wheeled bins. The trash company allows things outside the bin, too, if you call ahead. No extra charge, but I think the send the guy with the least seniority out on those days! :laughing:

It's cheap where ya'll are at for trash service. Here it was $80 a quarter. They would send the bill out after the next quarter was due and always missed a week because the check was in the mail during the next pick up. Got fed up with picking it up because of critters, and the missed week every quarter. Canceled the service and haul it into work now.

$20 a month, once a week pickup. It's worth it to me. I use a local independent hauler. We also have curbside recycling that gets picked up every other week by the county.

Can't believe those that haul trash into work. Not sure I would want to try that.

Not sure about elsewhere, but I can have any one of about 6 companies if I wanted. If unhappy with service...shop around.

I could have curbside pickup by private hauler, but take my trash to the county transfer station. Runs about $2-4 a week depending on what I take.

I forgot to mention, trash pickup is weekly, recycling is bi-weekly.

40ish/month around here for a 2 yard dumpster picked up twice a month.
Was about the same price for a weekly curbside pickup and being as we are on a busy road with a dropoff right after the shoulder, its a lot less of a pain to use a dumpster.
We can put most anything but tires and hazmat in the dumpster.
Could take it into work (they wouldn't care, several of the other guys do) but our dumpster is very convenient.
