cowboydoc,

I recall you live in the QC area, sounds like Scott county did the same thing Des Moines and Henry counties did a few years back. Because Gov. Branstad froze property taxes state wide for X number of years, the county simply went around and said "we're not raising your taxes, your property is just worth more money".

It's hard to tell on my property, I went from a mobile home to a new construction home and was annexed (unwillingly) into the city limits. My brother bought a home in Mt. Pleasant assessed at $65K, painted it and was re-assessed 3 months later at $85K, he appealed and won, but how many people just said "oh well?"

Since the re-assessment, they have built a new
city maintenance shop, fire station, remodeled the police station, are in the process of tearing down 3 elemetary schools and replacing them with one "centralized" school, built a rec-plex but can't figure out where all the money from re-assessment went.

I don't think Gov. Vilsac is going to extend the tax freeze, maybe its already lasped, but Des Moines County is talking about raising tax to cover the "short fall" from all the projects.

Richard .... you not only get an amen to your screed ... but I'll add one additional comment ....
do you think it's the old-timers that drive this "eminent domain" crap to steal land and sell it to developers that'll build those high-tax condos??

too bad that common sense ain't

oops ... finished reading the posts and found someone had beat me to the eminent domain matter. Oh well.
At least you guys are managing to convince me that maybe my plan of 1/2 a year in Canada and half here (after retirement) might be better done as live in Canada and vacation here.
Farmland is still pretty well protected in Alberta ... the move to the country kick reversed itself some time ago when people realized that all the kids activities were in town and they were spending all their time on the road. That's how I managed to originally get my (ex) farm so cheaply ... it was 45 miles outside the city.

too bad that common sense ain't

Glueguy,
How would a person go about doing something like that? I vote and everything but other than that politics really aren't my thing. That is until NOW!!

Pete, I grew up on Long Island, and lived there until a year ago. When I was a kid, even western LI was farm country, but it all got turn into suburbs of NYC. I moved to eastern LI, became active in my civic association and local politics to try to stop development or at least limit it. I was eventually president of the civic association, even though I didn't want to be. Out of HUNDREDS of land battles, we NEVER won any!! We delayed many for years, but eventually the strip malls, hotels, amusement parks, etc. were built. My beuatiful farm country, again became a suburb of NYC.

I work for the state, and tried for years to get a transfer upstate. Finally got it last year, and bought a small (10 acre) farm, in the middle of a properous farm community. As I save money, I'm trying to expand my acerage. Our house and barns are 200 years old, and I wouldn't change them for anything. Like you, it breaks my heart whenever I see an old building demolished. So far, my area has escaped any significant development. Our village freaked out last year when they put in a second traffic light. I want my area to stay a farming community. I'm 47, and I have no intention of moving again, even if I have to stand on my porch and take pot shots at any developers (just kidding). Early in this thread, Paul mentioned Clifton Park, NY. I'm not to far from that (not too close either). That's a great example. It was farm country a few years ago. Now it's a suburb of Albany. So much beautiful farm country falls to the developers everyday!! It's heartbreaking!!!

How do you feel Stowe (including the ski area) is doing along the lines of rural life?

Still would like to take you up on the invite to your place sometime.

Derek -- There's not much rural left in Stowe. It's a town of flatlanders who shout down the old timers at Town Meeting.

You're always welcome to visit our little corner of Stowe. Just don't mention our name in town. The elitists don't care for us!
