I have seen a few paint type products on the mechanic shows on TV that claim to seal and stop rust. One of them is POR 15. http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=6 Another one is magic something or other. Anyone know if any of this stuff works? It is expensive enough but may be worth it if it actually works.

I've used this stuff before on the steel framing of a horse trailer and it worked pretty well. Wasn't permanent but slowed the process way down. It's pretty **** hard to completely get rid of rust.

The best product I've found to stop rust is "Ospho". It's a greenish colored liquid about the consistency of water. Brush the loose rust off best you can, spray the ospho on and leave it to dry. I've painted over drill-stem that I'd treated with ospho and never had any rust problem after. Several years ago it was available at ACE hardware, and they had a generic product under their name that was the same thing but cheaper at that time. It won't cost much to try it and I believe you'll be impressed.
I'm just a happy customer and have no ties to the products.

Rust is cancer. Once it starts, it's hard to stop. G

I used POR 15 to take care of several small rusted areas on a Pontiac Firebird. The largest area was the battery tray. I still have the car 14 years after the restoration. The POR 15 looks like new.

Don't get any of the product on you or clothing......Will not come off. They even send rubber gloves with their kits.

Try www.eastwood.com They have a RUST ENCAPSULATOR product that neutralizes rust and primes in one step. Supposedly in an independent test it was better than Por15. Zuiko, is what you are looking for for your car or truck? Why I ask is I noticed that I have a lot of rust under my pickup caused mostly I believe from a lot of snow plowing (salt exposure). Just yesterday I had to replace the throttle detent cable and coolant lines due to severe rust. I'm scheduled to have the oil pan replaced next month, again to rust. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I hope the brake lines hold out. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I ordered 2 aerosol cans and 1 pint of the black encapsulator paint so I'll see how that works. I wonder if there is any product out there to protect brand new trucks from the beginning to prevent rust. I've heard stories where owners of new vehicles would take used waste oil and completely saturate the undercarriage of a vehicle to prevent corrosion. Messy but does it work?, Oil and water don't mix you know. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Would Ziebart undercoating work? Surely someone from the heavy snowbelt areas must do something effective with the extremely heavy salt used in that region.

Zuiko,
I am in the mist of restoring a 75' Mercedes Unimog and have been using Eastwood's RUST ENCAPSULATOR to as a base paint after sandblasting/electronic de rusting. I hope it works as claimed. I spent all this $$$ and time on it. I need this truck to last another 30 years! It was claimed to be a better product than the POR-15 and easier to work with. No special prep involved, just wipe what ever you are painting down with thinner after wire brushing off the flaked rust. So If you wait a year or two I can give you a full answer if it works! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I buy Rust Reformer at Lowes. It's made by Rustoleum folks; I think. It's an encapsulator kind of paint that reacts with the rust to form a paintable, black coating. It's probably a sulfide of some sort that reacts with the iron oxide to form the black iron sulfide. There have been many different versions of this from different companies over the years that I've used. Rust Reformer from Lowes is just the most convenient and (probably) gonna stay on the market.

You need to remove any loose rust with a scraper or wire brush before putting this stuff on. Any rust left there anywhere will catalyze more to be formed. My experience is that the rust doesn't come back with this stuff.

there was some posts here a while back, I think maybe in the project section here, or perhaps in one of the other forums, such as customazation ect. anyhow lots of info on it, some was about re-painting an old tractor, which led into iot. anyhow try a search for that. here are a few links.

for electrically removing rust.
