Look into a brush guard grate. My grill got two holes punched in it this week When you are going after brush, things can happen.
Your bread tray idea as a temporary solution is clever. I've been thinking of adding a brush guard to the grill guard of my NX, although I haven't been working much in heavy brush so far.
Most folks seem to use expanded metal. Here's what another member did for his Kubota a few years back that should adapt nicely to the shape of the Kioti grill guards. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/welding/219535-grill-guard.html
Last year EricTheOracle was thinking about fabbing something more substantial for his NX using 1/8" or 3/16" steel plate, cutting holes for the "mesh" with a plasma cutter. Don't know if he's had time to get further on that. Maybe he'll jump in with an update. I think there would be a good after-market demand for something well made.
The one problem I see with full mesh guards is blocking the headlights if you're ever going to be running on public roads after dusk. I don't think it's legal to use the work lights for that. But for any off-road use, the stock headlights don't add much anyway when operating an FEL.
