Sad - 4 yr. old in ICU

rips me up just thinking about it. Took me awhile to decide to post here but I figure if it prevents or reduces any one elses suffering its worth it. A friend of a friend's 4YO fell asleep and off back of Grandfather's tractor - has been in ICU for a couple of weeks. I know very little of the particulars but believe he was run over by tedder.

My friend had his dog in the tedder... 5 days later, same dog gave birth to 6 healthy puppies....

1 friend of mine died 4 years ago when he crashed into another moped, on a straight road.
I lost control over a car and trailer at 80 km/h on a narrow road with lots of trees. i flipped the trailer, bust into a tree with the trailer hitch, bending it.
No personal injuries, not even wet pants. just a moment of seldom silence when i stepped out of the car and just sat there.
another friend fell asleep behind the wheel, smashed a tree and became disabled on his left hand.

Some people die because of nothing, others make a violent crash and walk away with just a scratch and a grin of disbelief on their face... I have been the latter, so far....

In looking at a good many tractor accident stats you see a lot of 'grandpas'. In one recent self reported list of tractor deaths it seemed the vast majority were older farmers on older tractors. Adding a 4 year old to that equation is a recipe for disaster.

Where was he riding? If there was a tedder on the 3ph, was he riding on the lift arms? Or in his lap or something? Wow.

To the "grandpa" factor... around here there aren't that many younger folks farming. When I go to the stock yards it's amazing to look around. I bet the average age is around 75 or so. There's usually a couple of younger guys in the back of the room on the phones with a cattle company, but the farmers are pretty much all grandpa's. That may have something to do with it.

Growing up when I was at my grandpa's, I was always on the back of his Farmall, but he always had a carry-all for us to ride on. Tractors are so appealing to kids, but so dangerous. I have a 3 yr old now... it's good to hear of stuff like this to keep me ever so cautious.
