New neighbors a few doors down just bought their 4 Y.O. an ATV to play with on their property. No matter how many stories and an example closeby of a parent who used the boys ATV for a grave marker, can convince them that it is very dangerous. A helmet didn't stop a broken neck.

I am amazed by the people that always have $$$ for (sometimes dangerous) toys but then can't afford to send their kids to college (or trade school, or whatever). I'm not saying that is the case here because I don't know these people. But I know many other people who act exactly this way: they use their money for toys and their own entertainment and the expect someone else to pay for the important stuff, like education, health care, and retirement.

I grew up on them but my grandfather made us take a safety corse we had to pass it with a 100 % if we didn't we could drive them. But we where also 14 yrs old not 4. I broke my ribs when the three wheeler rolled on me at 17 yr old when a drunk drive pushed me off the road. He rolled his car off the road and died after hitting the side of my honda my grandfather still has it where it rolled on me he say to help the new kids growing up it the area to be wise and careful.

as someone who has owned 11 different ATVS since 1997, I feel like I need to add a few comments to this... First off, my sincerest condolences to the family.
ATVs are wonderful tools for work, pleasure, and to keep my kids involved/focused on something as they were growing up. It gave us something to do as a family year round. ATVs can also be extremely dangerous!. I have watched a dad holding a beer put his 4 yr. old on a lifted modified mudbike and enter him in a mudpit race. The kid couldnt even get on the bike on his own!. I've helped render first aid to drunk people with their thigh bone sticking thru their blue jeans. And unfortunately, I have been to a funeral for a 14 year old whose parents had ALWAYS preached safety and helmets to their son.
With all that being said, anything we do has a risk... baseball, football, track, hunting, fishing, riding a horse, mowing the grass, driving a car etc... We can only use good judgement and be vigilant about safety.. and pray!

I am really surprised that they (the gov??) dont require ROPS or some sort of anti-tip device on 4 wheelers.. I reckon the side by side models sorta have a cage, but im not sure how much protection its designed for
