Sad story, young man and PTO

The farmer who has the lease next to my property lost his leg the same way about 30 years ago. A boy I grew up with was helping him on the farm that summer and was with him when it happened and fortunately EMS responded before he bled to death.

I have always warned my boys about PTO safety and keep the shields on everything. Accidents can happen in the fraction of a second and I've always told them that sometimes, some things can't be "fixed". They are probably more safe around the equipment than I am sometimes. It's easy to get in a hurry and make a bad decision.

Thanks. I never go near the pto or implement if the tractor is running. I don't even hook up to the 3 pt unless I first turn off the machine. Sometimes this means turning on and off the machine a few times to make adjustments but I have zero trust.

When I was a child, my neighbor lost his leg due to a pto. From what I was told, he stepped over a running shaft and cought his laces or pants. I never trust the guards on a pto, never! They are designed so the shaft spins inside them. Well I have seen one of those plastic guards snag on the shaft somehow and rotate with the shaft or become destroyed in an instant. Especially during lifting or lowering. Even when the guard has that chain to keep it from rotating with the shaft. I will never trust one.

Thanks JJ for posting. I was very close to removing my master shield last week on my tractor due to the difficulty I have in attaching the pto shaft inside the shield. The only thing that kept me from removing it was that it was bolted in with the subframe for the backhoe and I didnt feel like removing the large bolts. I'll never consider that again.

Once when I was a kid my brother and I were helping my grandpa fill the silo with the grain elevator. My grandpa didn't have the shield over his the PTO and his dog (a big collie mix) got his tail caught on on the shaft.

It spun the dog over the shaft a couple of times before pulling his tail off. The dog survived and lived a long life but it was a lesson that I never forgot.

Poor but Lucky dog. After the dog healed, did the dog get close to the tractor again? :)

Later,
Dan

It's funny, he would follow the tractor all over the farm on the different paths and roads my grandpa had but whenever the PTO came on you could find him under a tree about 100 yards way. :)
