The operation manual I got from Hoye shows to use a SAE 30wt oil and the page on Hoye site says 15-40wt.
Would the 15-40 be best as it is a multi-viscosity oil or either as long it is an oil for diesel engines?
The 30wt covers the temp. that the tractor will be used most of the time.
This small diesel engine is new to me, in fact I never owned a diesel.

Fluid & Oil Types
Solution Engine - 15-40wt Diesel engine oil

Transmission/Hydraulic reservoir - sold under many names like -JD303, HyTrans, J10A, J14A, J20A,B,C,D, J27A or a host of other #'s. They will all say "Universal" or "Hydraulic/Transmission" oil.

Ft Axle (4wd) 90wt Gear Oil

Coolant (tractors With Water Pump) 50/50 any type antifreeze
Coolant (no water pump) no more than 20% antifreeze in the summer
Yanmar Tractor Overheating

Grease Zerks - any good gun grease

Fuel- Any blend of diesel that you can buy from a gas station.

I am no oil expert but believe most Yanmar owners use the multigrade diesel oil. Not advertising for Rotella but that is my personal choice.

30wt was popular, back in the day, and likely your manual is dated.

A multi viscosity oil outshines the straight weight in virtually every aspect. No brainer.

Yep, the ops manuals were either written, or copied from manuals that were written before 15w-40 was invented.

I think it was on here that someone said that in an old tractor like our yanmars you may not want to use the full syn rotella cause it may clean any gunk that may be built up on the inside of the oil seals and cause some mile leaks at the seals. I had never though about that. They said the cleaning ability of synthetics may be enough to clean the thin layer of gunk that may be there , that is all that is keeping it from leaking. I wanted to use the 5w40 to get better cold flow but this has always been in my mind. What do yall think should i go for it??

I always use Amsoil 15w40. I use their trans fluid as well.

I've never heard of this before, and I would have doubts about it. When synthetics first came out for automotive use, there were some leak issues with seal swelling, or lack of. That issue has been taken care of. Since the emissions regulations have come on the scene, there have been many improvements in oils to deal with sludge and other contaminates. Oils going back to the early days of multigrades have always done rather well at cleaning an engine. Synthetic's main claim to fame is that they function much better at temperature extremes than do dino oils, but they do not have ultra super-duper cleaning powers.

This was something that was mentioned on this site when i asked about 5w40 rotella syn vs 15w40 rotella dino.

I have also heard that syns have better cleaning ability than dino. I agree that milti grades do have a cleaning ability than oil from 30 years ago, like plain 30w.
