Well...that was a weird back and forth discussion!
Interesting trivia- less than 1/2 of 1 % of car crashes result in fire...
As for the other excuses...eventually Auto insurance money runs out...then the family assets run out....then the disabled go on public based insurance.
If you ask me (anyone

) anyone who makes a conscious decision to avoid or otherwise not using safety equipment- is being very selfish. It is the family that is left to pick up the pieces and deal with the aftermath. That then transfers to the public/taxpayer when that insurance kicks in.
I find it hard to believe that someone who says they wear a motorcycle helmet, doesn't feel a need to wear a seat belt. very misguided, or maybe just posting such foolishness because they do not have anything better to do.
Also, all airbags in motor vehicles are considered supplemental restraint systems (SRS).
According to NHSTA (they collect all the state data regarding fatalities), in Vermont- year 2007 it was about 50% effectiveness. You may rationalize that there are just some crashes that are not survivable- no matter what. However, a fair amount of the unrestrained fatalities were preventable.
In my opinion, with the number of EMS responses I have been on over the years- I would suggest that if someone chooses not to use safety equipment that is demonstrated to prevent injury or death, they should forfeit insurance rights. Might save the rest of us some money in the long run...
