I am running a hitch extender with a second receiver to pull the pop up trailer and a bike rack. I need temporary chain extensions. Any problem using a hook on one end to connect to the vehicle and some kind of connector that screws closed connected to the link just behind the hook on the original chain?

Not a problem as long as the chain extension and connecting link are rated for the weight of the trailer you are towing.

I recently extended some chains using links like George pictured. Today I'm going back to a shorter ball mount so I may be able to do away with them.
