On the new pt425s with the gas tank cap on the hood, notice where the gas tank is in relation to the exhaust. I know that it isn't safe to fill up a machine when it is hot, and it is even moreso onthese machines. Just a slight spill that would run down the side would cause you to have a real bad day. If for some reason you have to fill up when it is hot raise the hood and fill it up that way. By lifting the hood you are moving the gas tank away from the exhaust pipe. remember they have a heat sheild over the exhaust so unless you feel right in front of the exhaust pipe the machine might feel cool enough to fill up. Be patient and wait for the machine to cool down before attempting to fill.

Hi Toy,

I agree with you on the new machines - that was one of my concerns when I noted the repositioning of the various components. I must admit we can't always choose when we need to refill, especially when I am doing something that seems to chew more gas- like brush hogging. It eats gas like crazy when the going is tough. I appreciate being able to flip the top open (on the older design (July 03)) and just fill'er up!

Sincerely,

I have the newer model with the gas filler on top of the hood. As projects dictate continued movement, I usually use a large funnel and pour the gas into the tank even if engine is hot. Waiting would take an hour or more for cooling down. A person just has to be very careful.

Instead of trying to fill it up with the hood down check out filling it with the hood up. I backed mine on a slight incline lifted the hood and put a full tank in, much easier and much safer. By lifting the hood any spilled gas would run down the hood away from the fan and the tank with the hood lifted is not directly over the exhaust when it is in that position.
