Backhoe "Sagging" Backhoe

Thought you'd be interested to know the barrel's f-d up & that's tearing up the seals. It's all pitted I guess. Kubota's blowing me off but the dealer I purchased from is going to see what they can do. $580 quote to repair.

My Baby John's boom has a lock but the bucket and outriggers will sag down over a few weeks time and the loader bucket will relax from flat to curled a bit. I usually rediscover the outrigger sag when walking past the tractor in the dark. But for an older gal with over 1000 hours I'm pretty pleased with how long it takes for anything to bleed down to where it's noticeable.

Latest update. The local dealership I took the bucket cylinder to replaced the seals in the cylinder but found that there was a lot of "pitting" - quoted me $580 to have it repaired. I called Marshall Machinery in PA where I bought the tractor and they've gone to bat for me!! They had the cylinder UPS'd to them and have had it sent out to a local hydrualics guy there for repair so the good news is, it appears that the problem is being takend care of by the dealership I purchased from.

However, both dealerships had mentioned that pitting is often a sign of water in the hydraulic fluid. This tractor only had 19.8 hours on it when I took delivery and has been garaged since I bought it in October except for 1 night.

Is there any other reason that pitting would occur? I'm now freaking out wondering if there's a systemic problem with water (if there is any water at all) that's eating away at other vital parts of my tractor that only has 32 hours on it!!

Great news! My backhoe cylinder was repaired by Marshall Machinery (in PA where I purchased it) & it arrived today! It's all reinstalled, fluid topped off (I will do my 50 hour service early & replace all the fluid with SUTD when I get the chance to pick up some fluids & filters. Back in the saddle, now to get some seat time in!! Thanks for your advice!!!

That is good news. One way I can think of for pitting to occur on a new BH is if it sat around for a period of time when brand new with no hyd. oil in it, or just enough to lubricate assembly of the cylinders. I guess there is no way you would ever know if that was the case.

In theory, it shouldn't happen, but the weight of the backhoe is fairly considerable, especially when you consider the leverage of it hanging out the back of your tractor. For this reason, most of them have a lock to keep it in position and take the strain off of the cylinders. It's even worse when bouncing around while driving.

In theory, it did happen to me. As you can see in the picture, i had my hoe a half of a inch above the pad i rest it on. I forgot to lower it, 24 hours later i went in the garage to get something. The backhoe was still a half a inch above the pad yet. Of course in the picture i had lower it before i took the picture. But it shows the stress on the boom cylinder. How many people could say there backhoe could do this. I was shocked.
