My wife and I are buying a used motorhome from my in laws, and here in Michigan such a transaction is exempt from the 6 percent state sales tax normally collected on motor vehicle sales. As I interpret the law, it applies to transfers for TITLED VEHICLES between blood relatives.
I'm wondering how many other states allow the same exemption. We have had numerous vehicles change hands three to four times, such as dad in law bought new, sold it to his daughter, resold to brother for his daughter, etc. Although a transfer fee is charged (about $12.00) not having to pay the tax is a nice perk.
Does your state permit tax exemptions like Michigan does?
