Oil & Fuel Same oil for engine and hydraulic

This is in reference to a JD CTL 323D.

Does it make sense that the hydraulic oil would be the same as the engine oil? Two places in the manual list the same oil for both. When I called to order some fluids for maintenance the service rep didn't bat an eye when I said it was the same for both.


I guess I would just like someone to tell me, listen you noob that's how it works in big boy machines.

not the same class of machine... but Kubota calls for 10W30 motor oil in the hydrostatic transmission of my TG1860G garden tractor.
And it's still going strong after 14 years.

At the state park we operate two Toro Hydros that use motor oil in the transmissions.

But, I could not see using SAE 30 motor oil in the drives when we changed it, seeing that hydraulic oil costs less.

If it calls for 30WT oil thats what I would use.
Its not cheaper using hydraulic oil if it thins out to much when hot and damages the pumps or drive motors. (My opinion.)

The unit actually runs cooler with the hydraulic trans oil.
