My tractor has always given good service, no issues other than hard to start at times. (S470D Buck w/ manual trans)

Recently, while mowing, I moved the gearshft into reverse and nothing happened. She acted like she was in neutral. Forward gears work just fine.

My mechanic seems to think that the gearshift is too sloppy. Seemed OK to me, it has always been that way.

The only thing I can add is that just 20 minutes prior to the problem, I topped of the gearbox with #46 hydrolic fluid. I have since learned (in another thread) that it should have beentopped with UTF. But others and myself don't think there is any connection; jujst coincidence.

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions from other Satoh owners out there! Any similar issues / problems?

thankyou

When you say you topped it off, did you remove the fluid level bolt on the side of the trans, and fill w/fluid till it weeped out, or did you fill up the whole case?
It could be that, or it could be that the shift forks are just a little out of alignment...i think there's a thread on here on how to take off the gear shift plate and check that out.

thanks for the reply, 8ksi

I will need to double check if it is overfilled, but I don't think so. It is not filled to the top, it looked too low so I added #46 fluid (WRONG FLIUD; SHOULD HAVE USED UTF).

We removed the top plate of the transmission to look at the shift forks, etc.. They look fine, don't look bent. The mechanic that looked at it seems to think that there are springs and ball bearings in there (shifter mechanism) that are worn / loose, etc.

Any ideas as to where one might get replacement parts? Maybe off a used S470?

thanks

... Just a post to update; we found the problem. I had a mechanic look at it. He drained the fluid from the tranny, looked down into the gearbox at all the gears and shafts.. noticed that the reverse gear 'keeper' came off, allowed the reverse gear to slide out of position. Easy fix... slide gear back into place and replace the keeper... viola!
