Satoh S650G
I just bought a Satoh 650g and i was told it needed a head gasket. so i finally found the head gasket, installed it, adjusted the valves and put new plugs wire points condesnser etc. on..... Now that i got it back together when i try too start the engine it will backfire out the carb a little and run at a very low idle just puttin (barely runnin) for about 15 seconds and quit.... Im thinking maybe i adjusted my valves improperly or somehow i got it out of time????? can someone give me detailed instructions on how too adjust the valves? also the firing order and witch cylinder the plug wires go too from the distributor cap??? Im not really sure what too think, its got me baffled... any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

How are you making out with your tractor?
firing order on 4 cylinder engines is usually 1342. If you have the valve cover off turn the engine until #4 exhast valve is just closing and the intake is just opening. You should be able to se the valves on #1 and see where the dist. rotor is pointed. You can do the other cylinders the same way.

I believe i have all the valves adjusted properly and i have been runnin the tractor. But when the engine lugs down or you speed it up quickly from and idle it will back fire through the carb, spit and sputter, then clear righ up and run great. I tried twisting my distributor a little and it helped but now it wont idle at aconstant rpm. it kinda cuts out. not sure what the problem is and why i cany get it too run smoothly????

ok. I'd put the distibutor back where it was for now and suspect that the high speed jet in the carb is plugged. Try giving it some choke when under load. If it runs better then the carb probably has crap in it or if there is a high speed adjustment someone may have tampered with it.
Running lean may be why the head gasket blew in the first place.
