Know where you are coming from. I work in Cincinnati and a UK game is more important than any presidential election.

People here in the Triangle of NC with NCSU, UNC, excuse me, UNC-Chapel Hill other wise EE-Bota will get confused, :D:D:D, and Duke, think that BBall is King. They have not lived in KY.:laughing::laughing::laughing:

We live in Western KY tobacco country. The founder of Duke University waged a war against the farmers in the area. Tobacco sold here went thru his floors or else. One of my ancestors was tied to a fence, horse whipped, and had his crop burned for defying him. The book "On Bended Knees" chronicles this fight. Nearly a hundred years later the memories and tales passed down assures that Duke is hated more than any other school.

I read this, did a search or two, and ended up buy this book, [ame=http://www.amazon.com/On-Bended-Knees-Night-Rider/dp/0913383430/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333724700&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: On Bended Knees: The Night Rider Story (9780913383438): Bill Cunningham: Books[/ame].

I work/travel around/in the Duke University campuses and we have spent more time than I would like at Duke Hospital and the Children's Hospital. I am very glad we have them since the care is excellent but I wish we did not have the need of the facilities. The fact that the university and hospitals were built on one man's fortune is astounding.

Durham, the city with the Duke University and hospitals is heavily influenced by Duke and tobacco. Tobacco is gone now and the old tobacco barns and factories are being converted to other uses. I really wonder how much trouble the area farmers had with Duke and his monopoly. My understanding is that many of the railroad lines where built in NC were to get tobacco to market. I don't know if that is true but something I read. The book I bought has some references that should be interesting to read.

The book is very good but according to some of the old stories my grandmother told us, the violence is downplayed quite a bit. My grandfather died when my dad was five. He told me that after they sold their tobacco one year grandma got her six kids together and showed them a silver dollar. That was all they had to make it thru the year. Everything else was taken at the floors.

I have never even heard of this until you posted it. Since I lived in KY for awhile I am surprised I have never heard about this until now. It would have made for a good Foxfire type of research effort. The first page I can read on Amazon has a women being shot in the neck and kicked, while the husband is beaten, and their 13 year old son watches. Heck of a way to start the book and I have to wait until next week when the book arrives to find out why this was happening and if they family survived.

A silver dollar sure did not go far....

The author of the book (Justice Bill Cunningham) has written several books on what otherwise might be fairly obscure history and politics of western Kentucky. His other books (I think it's a Distant Light and Castle) are about race-relations/lynching and the KY State Prison at Eddyville. We are fortunate enough that Judge Cunningham usually speaks once or twice a year at our little church (as a Lay Speaker when our Pastor is gone), and he is a fantastic speaker and an all around good guy. As mentioned, his research and knowledge of the history of western KY is quite interesting and admirable.

And for what it's worth, if the Racers couldn't win the NCAA championship, I'm at least glad that the Cats did it for the Bluegrass.
