The next city over from me ( 2 miles? ) a child was backed over by a craftsman riding lawnmower... horrible. The 4yr old lost leg parts..e tc.

news didn't report much except that they flew the kid to shands and were sending 'all the parts they could find' in hopes of reattachment..etc.

Child lived with his grandparents.. neighbors said kid was 'a hand full.. neede dmore supervision'...

All in all .. a bad story... both for the kid, the grandparents, and lawnmower owners. Ironically.. this is just the ind of thing that will lead to some stupid law like 'no reverse gear'.. etc. When in reality.. that kid needed to be kept away from the mower while inoperation...

sad sad sad..

It always amazes me how stupid/irresponsible/inconsiderate people can be. It is bad enough that their actions have an effect on their own life, let alone the life of a little kid. It is obvious but I will say it: No law or new technology would prevent accidents such as this. How about taking responsibility for your actions?

Sound like I am venting?

Same here. I got my 6 year old grandson a 50cc ATV two weeks ago and this past Saturday he decided to play chicken with me while I was mowing. He got one warning before he got his rear warmed up a little.

That is indeed a horrible dumb bad story (Grandfather runs over 4 year old Grandson with Lawn Tractor in Belleview, Florida), we here at Shands are busy trying to put the pieces back on the poor kid.

The new Cub Cadet my Grandfather just bought has a saftey device that cuts the mower off when the tracotr is put in Reverse and it doesn't come back on until you manually restart the blades. We are going to trace it down and disconnect it if we can. He doesn't have any little ones around when he cuts the grass.

"He doesn't have any little ones around when he cuts the grass."

And I'll bet the Grandfather in the story would have told you the same thing... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Sounds like you're venting to me. I'd like to think that I'm "all that and a bag of chips" when it comes to being careful but the truth of it is, things happen. My buddy's dog nudged open the sliding glass door on their house (yes, he learned how and they let him so he could go by himself) and his grandkid got into the pool and died. The last thing any of us at work would've ever said was how stupid he was. More like for me was "there but for the grace of God, goes I". I've also found that being that way about someone else's misfortune invites bad things on myself. Uh uh.

There's no one on the planet more sorrowful than a man that killed/maimed his child or grandchild. It ain't up to me to wish ill on him.

HuckBB62-

I'm sorry if I sounded a bit harsh and judgemental with my statement. My heart goes out to your buddy for his loss and I would never lump him into the category of being irresponsible/inconsiderate for his misfortune. That being said, I come into contact with people on a daily basis whose sheer stupidity or lack of responsibility amazes me.

Example: We had a residential house fire in my district a couple of months ago dispatched at around 10 AM on a weekday. En route, the dispatcher notified us that a 13 year old girl was possibly trapped inside the house. My rig was the first on scene, heavy smoke coming from the second floor and a yound girl standing out front crying. While my partner and I entered the house to attack the fire, the girl was interviewed to determine if anyone was trapped inside. After several minutes, the girl confessed that she started the fire and was home alone (she was 8 years old) and made up the story about her sister being there with her. The police finally got hold of the girls mother who said she left the girl alone to go do some shopping. It was later determined that the girl had started a fire at least one other time (they had just rented this house). Who would leave an 8 year old home alone, especially considering her previous arson history? Why wasn't she in school?

I hope my example helps to explain where I am coming from with regard to my remarks. I'm sure those members who are in law enforcement have many more experiences with these types of people than I do.
