I took my mom for an eye checkup today. This takes a long time because they do an eye test, then put drops in to dilate her pupils, then you go back out and sit for a while, then they take you back and take pictures, then you sit for a while, then you see doctor.

Boring.

They always laugh at us because it is usually Mom, both sisters, and me. One sister had jury duty today so she wasn't there.

Back to the story. We were sitting there along with about fifty of our best friends when somebody sat down behind us. The chairs or back to back in rows. I heard a soft woof and turned around and there was a Golden Labrador sitting on the floor with his head in this lady's lap. He had the harness on with service dog signs on it. So of course I asked her about him. She said that she was a severe diabetic and that the dog was her constant companion. If her sugar gets high he sits and stares at her refusing to move. If it is low he puts a paw on her and pushes. The lady's husband spoke up and said that the dog had saved her life last week. Said her sugar was very low one morning and she didn't wake up. The man said he was a very sound sleeper and hard of hearing with his aids removed for nighttime. The dog apparently could not wake the lady up, couldn't wake the man up, so it jumped on the bed and started jumping up and down on him. He woke up realizing something was wrong with his wife and did whatever was necessary to revive her. Daannngggg, that dog was worth whatever they paid for him.

Said they had been at a family get together over the holidays with several friends and family. When they walked into the house the dog went nuts. He finally smelled of several people and sat in front of a lady and refused to move. The woman took her tester out and the lady's sugar was very high. She didn't know she was having any problems but said she hadn't been feeling well for a couple weeks. Said the dog didn't relax until the lady and her husband left for the hospital.

Once again, Daannngggg.

Just a short (hopefully) interesting story.

Now, that IS a good story. Nothing is broken, nothing needs fixing, everything is as it should be. Thank you, RSKY.

We take care of my wife's brother. Autistic with lots of med problems. We got him a dog from the pound, a norwegian elkhound, Bo and gave it to him for Christmas a few years ago. Bo would tell us when my brother in law needed something, he is nonverbal. Bo would tell us about med problems and even when his music stopped. He slept under his bed until we had to get a hospital bed, and helped him through many rough times. We see Bo as a gift from God, even if he is bossy sometimes. Just a SPCA dog but much much more. Norwegian Elkhounds are not the easiest dogs in the world to own. They are very independent and very willful but they are also very loyal and they "own you" as part of their pack. They will watchout for you and almost act as a caretaker would. (obviously not human but in their own way and with their own communication skills)

Does not surprise me that your wife's brother is looked after so well.

I have 7 of them so I know where as I type.

About the only way I would say Bo is willful is on the way back to the house after his walk. He knows he will get a treat and is in a hurry. He also knows I won't let him pull so he walks with bent legs like he is pulling something VERY heavy but does not pull at all. I get a big smile on my face every day just watching him. Ed
