Here is a good example of what not to do with lumber that needs edging from the outside of logs processed on a woodmizer mill. Ordinarily I would put these flitches(lumber with bark on one or both edges) onto the sawmill loader arms and trim them after cutting each log. This weekend I wanted to finish the order for post and beam you can see to the left of the tractor so I just flung the trim off to the right. Now I will have to pick each piece up, trim the ends with a chainsaw then put them on the mill to edge. Lots of extra work but some real sweet clear red oak is lurking in this pile.

Jim, with what I have seen from your pictures I know an edger can't be far off in the grand plan of the woodmills estate.

from what I have gathered, an edger is valuable for a two person operation. one to feed and one to pull off and stack. so at least for now I will edge on the machine, though I hope not to make any more piles like this one.

Mmmmm! All I can think of is how well that would do in my woodstove...and how easy it would split! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Had a similar situation a few years back when I had all those cherry and maples blown over by a storm milled into boards. With the garage full and nowhere to put the flitches, I cut them up and split them. Small stuff like that is great for hot, chimney-clearing fires.

Of course, if I had an edger...

no no no no that stuff on the ground is definately not firewood, the firewood is off to the far right and in the trailer behind the tractor. many of the logs I pulled out of the woods were clear, giving one or two passes all the way around providing clear lumber stock. It will take time but that stuff is where the profit is. I will keep you posted on what I yield and how long it takes to edge it. I have mountains of slab firewood if you are interested.

Aaah a man after my heart. I have been "negotiating" with Wood Miser on their all hydraulic saw. Dang they sure are expensive, but I have a tree surgeon that can provide me with lots of walnut, oak, maple, etc. logs. Is yours hydraulic? How thin have you ever cut? I heard it will cut verneer.

Thanks

93 Hd-40 yes hydraulic. don't go non if you want to work alone. this machine will cut wood so thin it dries and warps as the saw passes by. It will remove stock at a blade thickness but turns it to powder. thin stuff is easy to cut but much harder to dry.

They sure sound like a wonderful saw. I have all the brochures, but am a little lacking on the $30,000 for the saw. Oh well, maybe I'll send for the video and free popcorn. That will keep me happy a night or two more.

Mr. Woody, what is the going rate for your cut wood.. I was think about getting into this as I have the timber to do, and have heard the few boys with band saws stay busy. I have a bunch of cedar I could stand to clear.. Also from time to time have a wild cherry or walnut that goes down....
