Sawmill vs Service

I am liking the look of the Norwood mills, they have a lot of nice features compared to the lower price WoodMizer units. Have not looked at Hud-son yet. Any other brands people recommend?

IF I didn't have my Norwood mill, I'd check out an Ez Boardwalk... I've run one, pretty nice mill...

My Norwood mill is very accurate,

and has been one of my best buys...

I was saving for an Ez boardwalk. I just kept looking on craigslist and facebook market place and got a deal.

Same here, visited an EZBoardwalk owner over in my area. I was going to buy an EZBoardwalk but then a Baker HD18 showed up on ebay 100 miles away so I went that route. Baker is made about 25 miles from my property which helps if parts are ever needed. Sawmills are very labor intensive. Getting the logs to the mill and up on the deck, turning the logs, pulling the slabs off etc etc. The romance of making my own lumber quickly ended with me. :D Timber King is another I looked at since also made in Missouri. Those small mills seem underpowered. My Baker has a 20hp Honda on it and I couldn't imagine running anything smaller.

We hired a fellow with a portable mill;enough work getting the logs out.Had 4-5000 ft. of butter-nut done in about two days.No learning curve and little expense and waste. We loaded with our tractor;easy job well done.

Try as I might I can’t justify a purchase.

One of the reasons we were looking into it is that our Stihl MS271 was going to be pretty slow using an Alaska Mill. But “Light dawns over Marblehead,” I can buy a more powerful saw and sell the MS271 or keep it for backup.

My contractor neighbor has a bandsaw mill and maybe I can cajole him into cutting planks for me. Or I’ll just buy barnboard and stick to larger wood for the Alaska Mill. Not building anything fancy at all so it doesn’t make sense at a vacation house.
