I would suggest you look up Woodmills1 and read some of his threads. Lots of information there. There are portable band mills, chainsaw mills, and mills that have small circular saws at 90 degrees, all that move through a log. Plenty of variety and cost, and some may work out for your needs.

I have one. It's a Mobile Dimension Saw made by Mobile Manufacturing Copmany in Troutdale, Oregon. This is not a bandsaw type mill it is a rotary that has two horizontal edger baldes as well as the vertical main blade.

The basic mill will saw a board 4"thick by 12" wide. It will handle a log up to 48" in diameter, length is determined by the num,ber of sections of track.

There is a website where you can check out these machines, I beleive it is mobilemanufacturing.com. I have had mine for more than 20 years. It is truly a one man sawmill. The lumber produced, if you keep the teeth sharp will not vary more than 1/16" in width or thickness from end the end and from board to board.

I believe you will find it competive with the mid-range line of bandsaw mills.

I have a norwood lumbermate that I have hade for a year now and it has served me well for personal use and some custom milling. As said before there is a big price difference between mills and like tractors a mill needs to suit your own needs and budget.

yes by all means look into all of the mills of each type to find the one that fits your need. they are avaliable in circle and band from a few thousand dollars to many many tens of thousands. also check out sawmill and wood lot magazine and www.forestryforum.com to help you decide. if you expect any production look into hydraulics for log handling or plan on a crane or grapple. However you can saw fair amounts with some of the smaller/personal mills and log handling is reduced for swing blade as you set up over the log. with chainsaw mills you can also saw on the log. I have a woodmizer HD-40 that loads the log onto the mill and untill this summer i cut without any other log handling machinery. i would buy logs, you will be amazed at how nice a pile a log trucker can make. you will also be amazed at how hard it is to get some logs to roll or how to move a log 2 foot along its length to line it up with your mill. i regularly cut 1000 bd ft, handle the slabs, and sticker stack the lumber in a days work. i am and will be a woodmizer cutter the company gives great support and they are in for the long haul. i do this part time, teach high school full time and yet cut 86,000 bd ft my best year. good luck, do the research and keep us posted.
