Howdy,

I just found this board and am trying to read through the huge amount of information here. I wanted to say hello to everyone and introduce myself. I'll be hanging out here as time permits and probably asking questions from time to time, although hopefully not too many that have already been asked.

My quick question to start with is about tractor value. I'm buying a house that is on a couple of acres and the current owner has a YM-240 that he wants to sell me. It has 347 hours on it, is 2wd and comes with a shredder, plow, and some other implement that was too overgrown with weeds to make out when I had a chance to look at everything.

I got the chance to run the tractor and it started and ran good, but it looks like the tires are going to need to be replaced pretty soon.

Is anyone aware of a way for me to get a decent idea of what this tractor may be worth? The owner claims to have owned it since it had less than 50 hours on it and has no idea what it might be worth.

I'll try attaching a picture to this and see if it works.

Anyhow, thanks for looking!

Mike

Welcome!
One of the things that has a major impact on used tractor value is location. Where is the property and tractor? The NE tends to be a more expensive area when it comes to tractors. The YM240 is a built for U.S. tractor (not gray market) and therefore parts availability is very good. It also has a direct gray market equivalent in the YM2000 which makes used parts more accessible as well.

The tractor is roughly 24 engine hp, 20 pto hp, 2cyl diesel. It is a very tough tractor and is only started on its useful life if well maintained (350 hours is barely broken in). I'd have a very hard time putting a value on it, so I hope others will chime in here.

Thanks for the info. It never dawned on me that the location would have alot of impact on value. The tractor is in Texas about an hour from Houston.

Thanks again!

Nice setup on the tractor.. as a side benefit.. the tractor alread knows the lay of the land /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

That unit being a domestic model is great... deffinate parts support on most things.

I would guess 3000 and up.. depending on the implements.

I paid 3k for my 1700 which is less tractor than that 240.. and a grey unit.

Tires are tires... you replace them when they no longer hold air. You would be surprised just how long a battered old tractor tire will go. Lots of my antique tractors came with original rubber... I think I've replaced about one tire on each tractor now.. and then only because they completely fell off the rim.. ( rubber aint cheap! )

Mfl jr.

The gentlemen who replied hit right on the head. Serial # on inside left fender vaguley indicate year, but that is a loose interpetation. The year of manufacture could be 77-78 but not sold untill 79.

U.S. model sequential #'s start @10101 thru 10440. Engine #'s start @ 801063 thru 821298.

Yanmar specs on website indicate YM240 made from 1977 to 1981. And speculation on when they went red is 79??? Not sure about that.

Friend in the Sierras is looking at one for $10K with box blade and older Koyker 110. 1446 hours. Owner will not budge on price....Like the man said....location. Regards Mark

That's what the last edition of the Owner's Manual (or parts book?) says but my experience is a little different. Mine's s/n 10912 and is a green 'revision level 3' with the air cleaner under the hood. His has the air cleaner external so its a 'revision level 4' and its still green. I think they held with green paint through the last YM240.

As for year of manufacture - someone posted to SSB (another tractor board) that he has s/n 10963 and he bought it new in August 1981. So I assume my s/n 10912 was sold new in 80 or 81.

To the original poster - If the fender decal is gone, look for the s/n stamped on the transmission by your left ankle. But there is no information available to match s/n to build date. S/n, Engine#, and Revision Level are what you specify if you ever need to order parts.

As for asking beginner's questions - I walked your same path about six months ago, asked all the dumb questions, and got excellent advice from others here including several posters in this thread. You might like to look up my old posts or look at the Yanmar dealer brochures in my sig photos. Everything you find on TBN about YM1700's and YM2000's is relevant - they are all essentially the same tractor. (YM 1700 has a few mm smaller cylinder diameter and no water pump, not a big difference.)

Value - as part of the real estate purchase I would say fair value is $5k. It would bring more cleaned up and marketed properly but that's not the case for this transaction. My advice is to buy it. I love mine.

And welcome aboard!

Hey again,

Thanks for all the information. The next time I'm out there I'll try and get the serial numbers off the machine. I talked to the owner last night and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse on the tractor, so it looks like unless the whole deal with the house falls through I'll be an official member of the "Yanmar Owner's Club". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Take care all,
Mike
