I owned my 5254 for over 3 years and 300+ hours on it when I traded for the SC2400 last month. Never had any problems with the 5254 to speak of.

Here are some observations that I have made, that matter to me:

Cons

1. The 3pt hitch on the 2400 is not nearly as sturdy "beefy" as on the 5000. The 2400 is a limited CAT 1 and the 5000 is a full CAT 1.

2. The 3pt hitch on the 2400 will not raise an implement off the ground as high as on the 5000, lower lift arms are not as long.

3. The frame on the 2400 will twist at times; over uneven ground, with the FEL loaded. Not a good feeling.

4. The 2400 does not seem to have as much traction or power to the wheels.

5. Turf tires on the 2400 do not give as much traction as on the 5000. Wish I had not chosen the turf tires.

Pros

1. Much improved work station on the 2400 over the 5000. Easier to get on and off, wider more level and an additional handhold infront of the steering wheel.

2. More lighting including extra front work lights, tail lights, and turn signals.

3. Starts much easier.

4. Runs much smother than the 5254.

5. Greatly improved fuel economy. I estimate that my fuel usage is less than half that of the gas poweded 5254.

6. Much easier to remove the 60" MMM.

7. The 60" MMM on the 2400 is leaps and bounds better than the 54" that I bought with the 5254. The 54" mower was always clogging up and ruined several very expensive belts.

8. Maintenance is much less and easier to perform with the 2400. Everything is easy to get at. Thank whoever for the the dipstick to check the hydro instead of that horible sight glass on the 5254. Only two oil filters on the whole tractor to change instead of three on the 5000. The air filter is not the expensive one as on the 5000 either. The book actually says to blow the air filter out with compressed air. I did anywhey, but this is the first time I had actually seen it in print.

Overall I am very happy with the 2400 but wish that the 3pt hitch was as sturdy as on the 5000 series and that it would raise implements higher of the ground.

I look forward to many happy years of use out of the 2400.

Great write up! How does the SC2400 match up price wise with the 5254??

Joel,

I always traded a tractor in when purchasing a subcut so price is a hard nut to put your finger on. Every area is different. The only thing I can say is that you can get an SC2400 with FEL and MMM for about $12,500. When you compare this to the list price of a diesel 5000, the 2400 appears to be several thousand dollars less in price.

That's not bad. My FIL recently bought a smaller Kioti 4x4, hydrostatic (for his shop, it's not his). The only thing he got with it was a rear mower. That was over $10K. A FL would have pushed it past $12500 I'm sure. I'd much rather have a Yanmar and a CC dealer network.
