Thinking of purchasing a new zero turn mower. The old Dixon is still running but is getting parts hungry. I have been looking at the Scagg Turf Tiger, 61" cut with the 25hp Kohler engine. This looks like a solid and quality built mower. Does anyone out there have one of these units? If so how do you like it? How is it holding up? Would you buy another and would you recommend it? Thank you in advance for your responses!

I have a Scag 48" walk-behind and I love it. However, I do not know how their riders relate to their walk-behinds in quality.

Dozernut:
I lurk a bit on lawnsite, which is mostly commercial landscapers and mowing contractors. LINK There are a number of Scag devotees, and a lot of discussion of other brands.
They're all opinionated, however. so you have to hunt a bit for objective evaluations. (Totally different from TBN, of course.)

Our Kubota Dealer also handles the Scagg line of equipment. They swear by them(of course a dealer would).

They have a great deal of commercial customers owning Scagg. They say that they will sell 6-1 over the ZD Model of Kubota.

Dozernut,

I have had a Scag T, 61" w/22 HP Kawasaki Liquid cooled motor for 3 years and would recomend it to others. I love the thing and use it to mow 2ac or finished lawn and 1.5ac of pasture. I recently built a house so the lawn is temporarily gone, but will back soon. Mowing the 2ac of lawn takes about 1 hour. You can see the Scag productivity charts on their web sit at www.scag.com[\url]. I did not bele..."out-front mower." Hope this helps. -Roger

Thanks Roger, you have confirmed what I suspected. We mow a lot of acreage and the Scagg looks like a Quality piece of equipment. The Kubota is nice, but not good for mowing around all the trees. The Dixon is not holding up well, due to the hours we put on it. I appreciate your reply!

I bought a ZTR two years ago. In my local area there are three popular brands, Exmark, Scagg, and Gravely. I found the Scagg by far to be the heaviest built machine. I ended up buying the Gravely for my personal use on my 2.5 acre lot. The Gravely with 60in deck and 25hp Kohler was $2,000 cheaper than the Scagg with the same size deck and motor. If I was buyng for commercial use there is no doubt in my mind that I would get the Scagg. For my home use, though, the somewhat lighter duty Gravely with a much cheaper price was the right machine for me.

Jerry you have some good and valid points. We will take a look at the Gravely and see how it compares. We mow about 5 acres and literally just wear mowers out. Thanks for your information!

...Why is it the Kubota would not mow around trees?
Are you talking about it being a mid-mount, and you need a front mount?
Just trying to understand the difference, because the scags are mid-mount also.

My Kubota is a 4610 HST with a 3pt finish mower. It is a little heavy for mowing on a manicured, spring time lawn. It will not do zero turns and a sharp turn tears up the lawn. We probably (have not counted them) have a hundred trees to mow around, this is not ideal conditions for a tractor-mower combination. When you use this big of a tractor on a soft wet lawn it usually leaves ruts, which you have to repair. A zero turn mower is much lighter and more maneuverable and tends not to damage the lawn. A smaller Kubota would do much better, but not in my case. Besides the wife likes the zero turn mower and leaves the tractor to me/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif.
