Just got back from spending a week on the property in the mountains. Checked my email and saw an email from " Administration@verizon.net" It was titled: " Important notify about your email account". The text of the message stated that they had received complaints about my account being the source of spam. They stated that my computer was probably infected by a trojan virus. There was an attachment and instructions to follow the directions. I must admit that they almost got me but the " important notify" sounded enough like Russian-English to tip me off. The message was deleted. I could not find an email address for Verizon to notify them. Beware.

Sounds similar to one I've received several times recently:

Dear user of Acknowledge.com gateway e-mail server,

Your e-mail account will be disabled because of improper using in next
three days, if you are still wishing to use it, please, resign your
account information.

Pay attention on attached file.

In order to read the attach you have to use the following password: 47417.

Sincerely,
The Acknowledge.com team http://www.acknowledge.com

Attachment converted: Data:TextDocument.zip

The fact is, the Acknowledge.com gateway e-mail server is my own server, and I am The Acknowledge.com "team". /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

The intent is apparently to get me to open the attached zip file, which I haven't done (not sure it would bother my Mac system, anyway). Seems like a likely way to spread a virus.

I'll file a complaint about this one, if I can figure out who to complain to. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I've gotten the same thing. I have one multi-site server account, on which I have several web sites, including one for each member of the family, my former company site, one for my daughter's high school band, etc. Each has it's own POP mail server. I'm the administrator for all of the sites; no one else has the administrative passwords. I've gotten several of the identical emails warning me that I'm mis-using my email. They appear to come from the administrator of each mail server. In effect, they're trying to pretend they're me!

Obviously, I ignored them all, because even in my sometimes muddled state of mind, I didn't send those messages to myself. It would be interesting to find out what the attachment file actually does, but I'm not going to be the guinea pig!

If you opened it would virus protection kick in and delete it? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

No. It is actually an e-mail worm. I don't remember if it was the W32blaster or another one but a couple of months ago it spread like wildfire. It spread by spoofing itself as an e-mail from your ISP's support. Many people opened it and got infected.
