Have primarily used Schaeffer 700 15w40 syn blend in this pre-egr, factory rebuilt Detroit 60 12.7L. Thru the prodding of my Schaeffer rep, I decided to try the 711 10w30 syn blend. Was a little leery with the engine getting close to 500K miles on it. But, I gave it a shot. Not too bad of results. Numbers as good or better to the previous 15w40 numbers on multiple samples, except, this one shows the 711 has some pretty good levels of Zinc, Phos, Calcium, etc. More than their 15w40, enough to make a racing engine builder drool, and I didn't lose nearly as much TBN. A very stout oil. Used the same amount of oil, about 2 qts over the 20K miles. Sump capacity 9.5 gallons.

Any doubts that a 10w30 HDEO can't do as well as a 15w40 were totally blown out of the water. This is a factory remanned pre-EGR Detroit 60 that has almost 500,000 miles on it after the rebuild. It has to move up to 80K lb of truck and freight. One of the best oil samples I have seen in a long time. Engine runs a tad smoother, starts easier, and even does slightly better on fuel economy.

Did you buy a glider/glider kit?

Yep. A 2013 FL glider. Ordered in February 2012 and put to work in August 2012.

Very nice....love the color!

It seems like for anybody who doesn't care about going to CA, a glider makes a lot of sense. My neighbor does regular runs to CA, but has had all of his trucks fall victim to emission control problems at one time or another, and those bills are scary!

I started narrowing my lane focus in 1999. Done much better both time wise and profit wise by staying primarily in the upper Midwest. Haven't taken a load to CA since 1998. Just made sense to go glider. Saved almost $40K on a new purchased compared to similarly spec'd emissions truck.

And none of the hassles of the emissions truck.

I was shocked with the level of Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, and Phosphorus, and has a nice dose of moly thrown in. Great detergency and serious extreme pressure protection even for old flat tappet cams. Dan, my rep, told me that while he was at a Schaeffer convention, he was talking with some guys who run super modified race cars in the S.E. that are using this stuff in their motors. Seems like a good all around oil for a lot of applications even though it is targeted as a HDEO. And if it can perform like it did in an old factory remanned Series 60 Detroit, 500K miles into it's second life, it should work fine for just about any application. Only costs me about $16.21 a gallon, and was delivered free of charge. Not bad for a synthetic blend oil.
