Folks,
A question for the gun owners. I have a Gamo pellet rifle with a 4x32 scope. The gun is usually stored upright in the corner of a closet. I noticed the scope going out of alignment and kept making adjustments. Then I noticed the cause - the scope slides down the mounting groves on the rifle. This takes weeks to happen. I remounted it in february and then marked the grooves so I can see it has moved.

Is there a product to prevent this? I really do not want to have to store the gun horizonally all the time unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks,
Phil

I would think the problem would occur with recoil, not from standing unused. The mount for the scope on mine has set screws that hold it firm. What kind of mount are you using?

Pellet rifles require special scopes that can absorb recoil in both directions. The mechanism in a pellet rifle causes the rifle to first recoil forwards and then recoil towards the rear. If the scope lenses are not designed and mounted to absorb recoil in both directions, the accuracy could be affected.

Get a scope stop ( atually called a universal recoil stop), it fastens onto the mounting rail behind the scope. Attached is a picture of one and a site that sells them.
http://www.airgunexpress.com/ Go to mounts, then click on B-Square, it is the third item from the bottom.

Wow, Thanks for help. I have a Bushnel 4x32 air rifle scope. The gun, scope and mounts came as a package from Cabelas so I assume it is all designed to work together.

I will order the "stop". Thanks for the link.

I had the same problem with my gamo. It was also a package deal from Big 5 and I assumed it all should work together. I also tried the stop which stopped the rings from moving back. But then the scope started creeping back inside of the rings.
I visited some airgun sites and found out this is a common problem with springer airguns. It was recommened that I get some special airgun mounts/rings. I ended up getting some from BKL model 263 and have not had a problem yet.

Ron, could you eloborate a bit on the double recoil. I am having trouble visualizing how this happens, thanks in advance for your effort.

Air is not stored in the rifle. When cocked, a spring is depressed. Upon pressing the trigger, the spring backed plunger "springs" forward, compressing the air which pushes the pellet out the barrel. Upon leaving the barrel, there is recoil similar to any other rifle.

One thing to help with mounting scopes is to ensure everything is spotless clean, that no oil or other substance is on the surfaces. This is true with any scope mounting, whether air gun or cartridge gun.

I have also found that an extremely light coating of rubber cement or gasket sealant inside the rings helps everything stay put. Never had a problem with scope creep yet on a rig installed this way.

Blue Loctite works well also, after you degrease.
