Scotts 1642 w/Kohler CV16 dies

My ~10 year old Scotts riding lawn mower is giving me troubles. It backfires and dies after losing power. It has been running great and last week, I shut it off to take a phone call, then within 10 minutes of restarting it, I lost power and after backfiring several times died and would restart at idle but not throttle up.

I have cleaned the carb and fuel line thinking it was fuel problem for some reason, now I think it is the ignition coil (module, 1258417S) since the troubleshooting guide in the service manual indicates 3800 ohms for the spark lead to laminations. Mine is open. It won't even start now, it fires some but will not stay running, not even at idle..

Has anyone had the ignition coil go bad in theirs? seems to be $39-$52 online.

My new ignition coil came and I checked the spark plug lead to lamination resistance and it was open, just like the original one... figured I wasted my money.. since I already wasted my money, I went ahead and put it on, made sure all was connected right, and it fired right up, ran smooth. I still had new fuel line, filter and inline shutoff on order so waited on that. I installed the rest of the new parts, got it all buttoned up and mowed for about 1.5 hr and it ran great, so feel good that it was bad coil. Not happy that the troubleshooting guide was not accurate...

Happy camper now, mower runs great, I have fuel shutoff so if fuel solenoid leaks a bit I am not dumping fuel into crankcase..
