Here is the project I am working on.

Scrape Blade Project

Someone gave me an old snow blow blade that mounted on the front of a truck.
I want to turn it into a 3 point hitch mount to pull behind my 8N.
The blade is 6 foot and very heavy duty.

Will the pipe I am planning on using be strong enough for this.
It will be the white basement support pipe in the picture.

I can't weld worth a flip. And I'm gonna have to pay someone to do the welding.
So I need to keep the welding to a minimum.
The pipe will have to be welded up in the T shape with the upright on it.
And a 6x24 plate will have to be welded onto the front of the pivote plate.
Everything else so far can be bolted.

I also need a way to attach that round pipe to a flat plate (20 inch circle).
I got a few ideas that require welding.

If I can get the materials and welding cheap enough then
I would rather just get the whole thing welded.
My budget for the whole project is about $100.

So what opinions can ya'll give me about my project.

Thanks.

One of the things I did when I made my rear blade was to put holes on both sides of the round plate so I could swing the blade for pushing and pulling.Just don't weld the plate 90 degrees off like I did during this fitup..... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Will that 3 inch pipe be strong enough for this project.
I would rather use 3 or 4 inch square tube but that's a lot of $$$$.

Thanks.

That would depend upon the wall thickness of the pipe.I was running out of time this morning when I replied or I would have asked about it.Most of the basement jackposts I have seen have been rather thin..14 to 12 gauge steel. These work for basements because all of the load would be of the compression or "straight down variety".You are going to be subjecting the pipe to torsional (twisty) and also a combination of compression and tension as the pipe wants to bend.Round pipe is good for torsion, but not so great with the other two...unless the walls are thick enough.I really hate to see you pay someone to weld it up and have the darned thing go sideways if it bent. This is what happens when the blade turns parallel to the tractor!!

In my case...I had a weld break...dumping me in a real pile of poo...
I know you're a pretty big guy...so block up your pipe and stand on it in the middle...see it you think it'll hold.I used 3 1/2 inch black pipe on my blade and also as the hinges on my scissor lift dump truck....hasn't bent yet.

PS...remember to finish up any tack welds before putting stress on anything!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I just went out and measured it.
It has a 3/16 wall thickness.
As big as I am I don't think I could bend it by standing on it.
And I know I couldn't bend a 5 foot section.

My bad welding is a combination of things.
1. I don't know how to weld. but I have been practicing some.
2. My welder is too small. One of them cheapo HF Arc-110 stick welders.

But I got it cheap off ebay for $5.

I got a brother-in-law that is a welder. But it's a day's drive to his house.
I have sent small items to him to weld for me.
Probably get him to do as much of this as I can.
Mite even get him to teach me some welding.
