Well, I may have went and did it today. The battery on my truck died while I was at the back of my property, so I hiked to the front, got on my 1500D and tried to jump the truck off.
I wasn't getting the results I wanted, so I left the jumper cable hooked onto the neg. terminal of the battery and moved the positive over to the solenoid (#8 on the picture here )
It sparked a bit, and I quickly took the jumper off.
Now the tractor will not start. When I turn the key I can hear a single click from around the starter/solenoid, I think. Using a knife to try to start it at the solenoid produces a spark, and maybe a click (cannot remember now, dang it.) I do not think the battery is low, but when I have light tomorrow I will lightly tap on the solenoid to see if I can unhang it (if it is hung) and perhaps bring the battery up to the house to charge.
If you had to guess, what would you say is wrong with it, and how to go about fixing it? A new solenoid is $50 before shipping.
