I found this for sale locally last week, pretty reasonably priced. I'd been looking for an AC/DC welder for a while, just DC would have been fine with me. This one was old enough to be made in the US, all copper windings too.

Gave it a try today with 7014 rods on DC, works like a charm. I hadn't used a stick machine in over 20 years, it's surprising how quickly it comes back to you.

It seems in the recent times sellers pitches would mke everyone believe you need $3000 mig gun to do serious welding. When I got my things towrds the end of the 80's I ws told tht stick would be obsolete in 10 yers. Guess wht, I m still witing:confused2:. 8 times out of 10 the welder I use is the stick mchine if only for its quick setup plus verstility you just cn't get from the consumer grde mig units. For just few hundred bucks you could weld most things from hevier sheet metl to your own bridge with tht mchine in most cses. From the looks I would guess tht is Century Welder. No big bells & whistles but definitely very worthy especlly those older ones which tend to be better qulity. If you've been out of it for some time try the new helment's out. You will toss your old school one quickly decent ones only cost fifty bucks.
Sorry, but you cn guess which key is shot on my computer, new keybord on the wy thnks to Eby:)..................

As long as we're guessing letters... I'll have an "a", Vanna... Gotta hate it when that happens.

I agree with the ease of use, they're not a bad machine even after all these years. Mine was built in 1983 according to the sticker on it, the seller was trying to tell me it was only 10 years old. I don't think so..:) For one thing, Simpson-Sears (Canadian version of Sears-Roebuck) hasn't been called that for at least 20 years, maybe more, and they haven't sold anything made in the US for that long, either.

I expect I'll use it for most quick heavier jobs, I still like the neatness and precision of my MIG for fab work (what I do of it, anyway).

You're right about the helmets, I bought a Miller Performance series auto-dark helmet about a year ago, I've been pretty happy with it. A little pricier than some, the headgear is quite comfortable compared to most.

Yup you got the right nswer to the $64,000 question. It's hrd to get good price for nything but the stright C mchines. Lots of guys buy the cheper ones nd sell them for better mchine with the DC function so they will be ble to weld the thinner stuff. Funny, ltely lots of guys do not know how to weld with stick these dys. Too bd since it's so simple. Lots more simple thn trying to figure out words without the busted key letter:drool:

If you relly wnt the skinny on tht welder try this bord. These guys cn tell you nything you wnt to know bout welders except where to get tht specil missing letter of mine. Weld Talk Message Board and Online Forum - Hobart Welders
