My dad borrowed my tractor, and he has informed me that his horses ate my seat. I'm not too heart-broken since I've been thinking about getting something different anyway. As it is, the seat is too low and too close to the steering wheel. It makes for some sore knees after a few hours of work.

What suggestions do you have for a new seat that will be higher and further back? Possibly something adjustable?

It's kinda funny, but I use bass boat seats. The backers are plastic -- won't rot. The foam and vinyl are made for constant outdoor use and are thick and comfy. I mounted them with both a quick slide in attach and a swivel.

Besides, I had two extra ones sitting around...

My Ford seat was really uncomfortable - found thicker seat with a higher back at Tractor Supply. It is yellow so probably is a JD seat. Made a set of mounts for it and been using it for about a year with no more back aches. Lewis

Here's what I finally did to fix the seat...

I bought a new seat cushion at the local Army Surplus store for $15. The seat cushion "almost" fit my original metal seat back. The foam didn't line up exactly with the edge of the seat, so I couldn't just use the old ribbing to attach the new seat to the old back.

I used some good old weldwood adhesive to glue the excess vinyl from around the edge of the new seat cushion to the back of the cushion foam. I did this to protect the foam that would otherwise have been protruding out from the edge of the metal seat frame. I fabricated some "buttons" from some 3/8" bolt heads and pulled the "buttons" through the foam cushion to attach it to the seat back. I got the idea from an old couch cushion.

While I had everything apart I took some scrap tubing that I had from an old treadmill and fabricated a new underframe for the metal seat frame. This moved the seat up 3" and back 1". I had to make new "hinges" that attach the seat to the tractor such that it can flip up. I did this by welding a square 3/8" nut on perpendicular to the head of a 5/16" bolt. I was pretty proud of that since it is my first useful application for my new (to me) welder.

It's amazing what a difference that extra 3" makes in comfort.

The one thing that the new seat doesn't have is a hole in the bottom. I realized how useful that old hole was yesterday when I got up and sat down without looking. It had been raining that morning, and the new seat had nowhere for the excess water to drain... Wet pants! I will look before I sit from now on.

I bought a new seat yesterday a TSC $79.00 the only problem is there is nowhere to bolt on the seat belt. I never noticed that the belt bolted to the back of the old one. I guess it has to or every time the seat goes up &down the belt will just get loose & tight again if its bolted to the frame. Any body else have to customise a bracket?
