Good Evening Guys,
OK maybe that title is a little bit strong but I kind of had the bejesus scared out of me today ! Im sure a good number of the guys on this forum remember me getting layed off from my modelmakers position with Pitney Bowes last Thanksgiving. After sitting around about a month I picked up a partime driving position with a local junkyard driving a flatbed carrier for them picking up junk cars three days a week, sometimes a bit more on the hours.

We are based in southeastern Ct, and my first run was to Waterbury,Ct. The young fella that supposedly owned the vehicle came into our establishment, title in hand, and did all the necessary paperwork at our office for me to pickup the Dodge caravan, btw it was bright RED ! So I get up to the address in Waterbury to put the van on the carrier, its a low income project, I think you get the picture ! I meet the fella who had previously done all the paperwork at our office and give him the check for the vehicle. I give him the check and he is gone in a flash ! Thats when all he!! breaks loose ! All these PR's start streaming out of the building as Im winching this vehicle on my carrier ! I dont see any knives or guns yet but Im hopelessly outnumbered, with my only defense, a yellow Nextel cell phone ! :) The lady that supposedly is the owner of the Red van is shaking her fists at me saying thats her vehicle and what the he!! am I doing !!! I try and explain to her that I have the Ct state title and that I allready payed the fella that owns the Red van ! She wont buy a word of my story and the crowd wont let me get to the controls on the carrier ! The vehicle has NJ plates on it and she says she pocesses a NJ state title, which I ask her to show me so I can verify the vin # . She goes back inside the complex as the crowd watches me from a safe distance ! She comes back out and does indeed have a NJ state title with the proper vin # . At this point Im getting confused and the police arrive ! :)
The officer steps out of the cruiser and asks both parties to explain whats going on, which gave everyone a chance to explain their story !

Round #2, I lose, she had the most recsent title and he rules that the Red van is indeed hers ! I apologize to the lady and drive the van off of the
carrier and get my butt out of there before there are any holes in my body ! ;)

Round #3, I finish hauling at the end of the day and walk into the office only to get the end of the story. Oh BTW we cancelled payment on the check in the morning a few minutes after I payed the supposed owner, about the same time the police rolled up into the projects ! Come to find out, the original owner, who was away in Iraq for the past few months serving our country, was indeed the owner of the vehicle and had the title stolen from his apartment while he was away. The crooks then did some forgeries to enable the vehicle to be titled in NJ and sold it to the unsuspecting family that I encountered !

Round #4, its still his vehicle !

This is why I want to move to Vt fulltime !!! ;)

Just another day in the life of a junk hauler ! :)

Note to self... Load the vehicle, before I issue the check:)

I grew up around the car business and repo work is very dangerous and most tow operators will not do it or charge at least double the going rate.

The owner of a small family owned car lot acquainted with my family was shot in the face repoing a car that he had sold...

Scott, be careful out there!!!

Dang Scott,
I remember sweating over the lathe or mill trying to hold a number and thought that was hairy. But your new job beats the heck out of that. Be careful man! Wouldn't it have been nice to have the police there first instead of the other way round? If I were you, I'd move to Vermont.

Scotty, glad to hear you are back home safe and sound.:)

Hey guys, if I understand the story this was NOT a repo pickup.
It could happen to anyone with all the "smart" crooks loose today.

My momma said;" don't belive anything you hear and only half of what you see".
Now I'm not so sure about the "other half":D

Scott,
A few days after 9/11 I found myself out of a job from high tech. There I was in North East Vermont with what seemed a hopeless situation.

At first I worked on digging out my basement with a garden tractor.. long story but I did make significant progress and my wife did not have to deal with my laid off miserable personality which was focused on the dirt... :)

I've driven school bus, worked maintenance at a cheese plant, tried some small buisness ideas, etc. I've met and worked with some wonderful folks since 9/11 Surely not where I thought I would be before those towers fell but....

Finally I landed a field service job (which is my passion) and am writing this from my laptop in the middle east country of Oman. 28hr trip home tomorrow.

I feel your pain. Stay safe!

Hey Scotty! Good to hear from ya! Man, that's not a job for us old timers! Back about 1975 or so, I rode a couple nights with a buddy who repo-ed cars for one of those "buy here-pay here" used car/clip joints where they usually sold the same car 5 or 6 times before someone FINALLY actually paid it off. We got shot at, chased with tire irons, had dogs turned loose on us, and one guy threw apples at us. I was THINKING about taking a job driving a wrecker 4 nights a week. After that brief experience I decided to let someone else have the fun.

Be carefull!

Bill

Marha'ba

Yes those long flights were always welcome as I knew I was coming home.

Me and US customs at JFK never did come to a mutal understanding over things at 5:00am. :) But at least I was home.

You be safe!

Scotty,

Nice to hear it worked out for you, but I also think you got lucky and it could have gone the other way too. There is always another way to make a buck, and risking your life for it is always at the bottom of my list.

Good luck,
Eddie
