Security & Theft Securing tractor from theft

In Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and other "FREE" states if during a confrontation with a would be thief the thief assaults you (don't they always???) and fearing for your life you defend yourself with deadly force there just isn't much of a problem for the intended victim (now survivor.)

If you defend yourself properly , as taught in the state lisc concealed carry classes and the result is the attackers death, oh well. All the classes I know about teach a double tap to the center of mass to stop the threat with follow up shots if the attack hasn't been stopped. Two shots to the center of mass have a good chance of being lethal with any gun worth carrying.Pat

Yep.. my thoughts exactly...

And if there is only one side of the story, from the survivor, er victim the problem has less of a chance of going to court.

Let me jump in here with a voice of reason. I am very familiar with the property protection laws in Oklahoma. Arkansas has moved closer to Oklahoma law in the last few years. Oklahoma laws may be the most permissive laws in the nation. I dont know that for a fact but have not heard of any that are more permissive. In Oklahoma you have the right to use deadly force to protect your self and your property. If someone is stealing your tractor in Oklahoma and you use deadly force to stop them you are within the law. In Arkansas the initial concealed carry bill expressly forbid you to use deadly force to protect your property. You were only authorized to use deadly force to protect your person. Later amendments to the law included protecting property. In either case these laws do not apply to booby traps. You can use deadly force against someone that you catch stealing your property. You cannot set up a deadly force booby trap to stop someone in the process of stealing it while you live an hours drive away. I would STRONGLY recommend to anyone thinking of making a booby trap to protect their property not to do this. Buy insurance. As someon has already mentioned all it takes is one kid to find your tractor and be checking it out to get killed and you can be in a world of trouble. Even if you are found not guilty in criminal court are you willing to bet everything you own now and in the future on how a civil court will look at it. Booby Traps Law & Legal Definition This article does mention geneva convention and I realize that the US is not a signature to that but the definition of booby traps is interesting.

SparkFun Electronics - Modem Long Range 433MHz: UM96 - Includes Antenna and Cable

They also have some gsm cell componants
SparkFun Electronics - GE863 Module with GPS

for example t mobile? does have a prepay plan. if it is any thing like tracphone its about 50 a year to keep the unit running.

fyi gemini if you follow that reasoning you could make burgerlar alarms illeagle. as for the paint/teargas mine. there is product out there that is a foam with pepper spray/tear gass like effect on contact. it also paints the theaf with a uv type permant mark that can be later verified by the police. 4+ days before it wears out of the skin. that foam stuff is often sold in replacement of pepper spray as an assailent has a hard time explaining away the paint.

also i find the statement "apparently harmless portable object" i think we could safely argue that a tractor does not petecularly fall in that catigory. a tin of cookies would certinally fall in the harmless object catigory i dont think complex mechanical objects would though.

Guy comes home and catches three guys burglarizing his house. They run. He chases them in his car into town at high rate of speed. Taps bumpers. They crash into a tree. All three are killed. Flowers go up on the crash site like they were model citizens, but people are quietly saying good riddance.

The homeowner didn't get a citizen's award for cleaning up the community. He's went to state prison for vehicular homicide.

You might find one thief or you might run up on a lookout, a driver and somebody who is doing the stealing.

That is pretty funny, simple soldering skills. You are correct the simple soldering skills could connect devices. The electronic background to know how to hook them up and what to do with them might be a tad bit different. RS232 serial line into computers is nice. exactly what program do you use to read those and react to them. If you do not have a computer or electronic background you might have problems with that.

I believe i said lethal force booby traps. I am aware that the arguement might be made that if you have a booby trap that sprays die and the thief is alergic to die that you have now made a lethal force booby trap. I believe the issue there would be intent. If however you put a claymore mine under the seat and if the tractor is moved without disabling the claymore then the intent there would be pretty obvious. However everyone is free to do what they want. I just wanted to point out the the law frowns on Lethal Force booby traps. I for one agree with that. There is nothing on my property worth accidentally killing a child for if one should happen to accidentally fall afoul of the booby trap. Plus the other problem with booby traps is that I can guarantee that at some point I would have just a few minutes and want to get something done then I would forget to disable it and I would be the victom.

I.

Won't be long before the rs232 is nothing but a bit of data and old specs .. something you will find in a history book... already getting hard to find native searial ports on computers or add on cards as it is.. though sometimes you can find USB converters.. etc... I bet it won't be long till usb and firewaire are about the only non video/audio IN/OUT ports on a computer..

USb are non video/audio ?

I am looking at a projector for buisness meetings. The ones I am concentrating on have USB inputs. I might be wrong I would have to check and make sure but I believe the sounds system on the one desktop computer we have hooks to the USB port on the computer.

Ok.. Iguess I should have taken about 3-4 paragraphs and specifically dotted all the I's and crossed thet's before making an open ended technology post..... or should have fully prefaced all my comments..

In short.. how about 'dedicated' video / audio ports?

Yes.. you can do audio on USB..e tc.

How about "Lo-Jack"?

Didn't you see on 60 Minutes where the surgeon general published a report on Lo-Jak being linked to brain tumors. Something about the RF energy...
